But, I've been wanting to build the application myself because then it allows a bit of customization. While the pre-built version has no default login instance nor default sign-up instance, building it myself lets me make hear-me.social the defaults (although using it with other instances is still supported).
For the next few weeks, phanpy.hear-me.social will continue to reference the pre-built version, while https://phanpydev.hear-me.social references the custom-built version. I will personally use the custom version and if I don't experience problems, I will make it the standard here.
If anyone is using phanpy on hear-me.social, it would be great if you can try using the phanpydev version instead to help me test it.
You may need to log into phanpydev twice to get it to show posts. Sometimes I saw a blank home page after the first log in after switching from phanpy to phanpydev.
For those who haven't used Phanpy, the alternative Mastodon UI, you ought to try it. Reading messages is just much more pleasant.
I'm pretty bad at actually reading my timeline after being afk. Similar to twitter, I find 250-300 follows is where I start feeling overwhelmed and don't really want to follow anyone else. That said, #phanpy has an intriguing new feature called "Catch-up" and I'm still trying to figure out how to use it. I'm curious how others are using it? Just plow through (or skim) the 100 or so toots in the list from the past X hours? Group by authors you want to hear from? Group by boosts? Sort by likes?
Technical question. Does anyone happen to know why, when I use the alternative Mastodon UI, #Phanpy, I never see rate limit errors, but when I try using #Elk I get the error constantly? So often, in fact, that for me, Elk is completely unusable.
Wow…Catch-up on #phanpy is really great for, um, catching up!
It’s really nice to be able to click on a particular person to see their stuff that you missed or to sort your feed by likes or boosts to just see the popular stuff at a glance
I think that I have found a wee bug in #phanpy. I posted my picture-for-the-day (a photo of roof tiles) about 20 minutes ago. It showed up instantly in my stock Mastodon web browser, but still hasn't appeared in my phanpy feed. However, it has already appeared in two phanpy notifications (likes), where it can easily be seen. So phanpy knows about it, it's just not showing it to me.
I'm pretty sure that if https://phanpy.social/ was the official look for mastodon on web, and someone was able to make the UI/UX to an app, mastodon would be an easier sell to the non-tech crowd.
If you're even moderately interested in custom #Mastodon clients, don't sleep on @phanpy by @cheeaun. He’s doing amazeballs work and has some interesting dev prototypes for Phanpy going on. I mean, check out his “catch-up" timeline experiment – I could see myself using that a lot.
