Went all black with the case. New screen and battery and a 64GB CF card for storage. Dumped my #Bandcamp collection as FLACs on there to run through #Rockbox
What are some small, FOSS-powered bluetooth music players that y'all like? Smartphones are a bit too large. Bonus points for using SD cards, usb-c (or other non-proprietary things).
My Sansa Zip Clip running #rockbox is on its way out 😭
I was $today.days old when I realized that curl's @bagder was also responsible for the music player I enjoyed the most until today. #rockBox on the iPod nano 1g rocked!
How the first gen ipod was reverse engineered to run #Rockbox:
Someone figured out that when loading a particular HTML page (for viewing on the device), the device would reboot. It crashed. A buffer overflow in the HTML viewer!
The device remembered what it did before the crash, so it would reload the HTML page again after boot. Unless you connected to it over USB and removed the HTML file it would stick in this cycle.
@bagder it was so awesome. gapless mp3 was great for listening to live shows, and i just had to throw them in alpha order in a folder, no worrying about how some custom firmware was going to interpret mp3 tags or sort things. copy files, go to the gym, and run and lift to awesome music on my sansa clip with #Rockbox!
On this day, 22 years ago, the #Rockbox project started, co-founded by me. We wrote an open source firmware for mp3 players. On its 10 year anniversary 2011, I wrote this:
when we had get-togethers of #rockbox hackers, we did these (silly) towers of devices that could run Rockbox. Look at this beautiful example featuring 78 mp3 players.
@bagder hah I recently found my Sansa Player in a drawer, running #Rockbox and thought of the amazing project and the community and about the remaining handful of hardware it actually didn't run on. 🥰
I bite. (With only 14 hours left the #FOMO was too big to not get one.)
Looks like I have a reason to learn some Lua in September, then...
I'm still a heavy #rockbox user, but the my old ipods players are dying, don't support bluetooth and the 8GB max storage on those Nanos isn't that great, either...
