The United Kingdom’s independent nuclear safety regulator has announced that it will be 🔸prosecuting the company managing the Sellafield nuclear site🔸 over💥 “alleged information technology security offenses during a four year period between 2019 and early 2023.”💥
It is not clear whether senior managers at the state-owned Sellafield Ltd. will face charges.
Under the Nuclear Industries Security Regulations 2003, individuals convicted of an offense can face up to two years imprisonment.
“There is no suggestion that public safety has been compromised as a result of these issues,” the regulator announced on Thursday,
adding that the decision to begin legal proceedings followed an investigation.
“Details of the first court hearing will be announced when available,” stated the ONR.
#Sellafield had previously been the focus of enhanced regulatory attention over its #cybersecurity#failings, as the U.K. chief nuclear inspector’s annual report revealed last year.
At the same time, #EDF, the company operating several nuclear power plants in Britain, was placed under similar measures.
My recent recording of the #Sellafield alarms by-phone becomes quite bizarre when dubbed into Korean and then back into English. Original video: https://youtu.be/Q-mnJowMlAI
I recorded these on 06 April 2013 originally, and they have changed slightly in the intervening years. Check the video description for that original recording if curious.
If the #nuclear industry retail thinks it can be part of the #greentransition, then the Guardian's ongoing revelations about #Sellafield suggest they need to put their house in order.
Of course, for many this will merely confirm exactly why Nuclear cannot be regarded as a safe component of any #greenenergy strategy.... you don't get these sort of problems with #wind & #solar (which is not to say they have no problems of their own, but they're less critical).
Sounds like those interrogations where the murderer swears on their Mum's life...
"We are straining every sinew to accelerate safely what we have to do to stop the leak, and the best way to do that is to remove the waste safely," he said. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-67720325#Nuclear#Sellafield
The kind of British exceptionalism that's touted by the #UK government is so far removed from reality that it's virtually pathological - it's a form of delusional, narcissistic, denial. It's either that or they think citizens are gullible enough to buy it. The litany of #Brexit failures notwithstanding, this is the latest blundering mess... #sellafield
The government has responded by saying it has no evidence of #Sellafield nuclear site hacking.
The government claims (see image left) that its 'monitoring systems are robust' and is confident that 'no such malware exists on our system...'
And yet, headlines (see image right) show that the UK government's security has been breached/hacked multiple times over the past few years, most recently last year.
You can't believe a word that passes their lips.
"Sellafield, Europe’s most hazardous nuclear site, has a worsening leak from a huge silo of radioactive waste that could pose a risk to the public...
The leak of radioactive liquid from one of the “highest nuclear hazards in the UK” – a decaying building at the vast Cumbrian site – is likely to continue to 2050."
'Described as a nuclear Narnia, site
is a source of economic support for Cumbria – and a longstanding international safety concern.'
'Former UK secretary of state described it as a “bottomless pit of hell, money and despair”, which sucked up so much cash that it drowned out many other projects the economy could otherwise benefit from.'
'Latest estimate for cleaning up Britain’s nuclear sites is £263bn, Sellafield is by far the biggest proportion.'
