Huh. This whole time, I thought Glen Pine (second vocalist, and trombonist, on #TheSlackers) was a Black dude, based on his singing voice. Nope, whyte boy from Boston! Can't tell whether I should be impressed or slightly weirded out.
Like, a lot of white folks singing #ska affect a clear Jamaican accent influence, but most of them sound exactly like that: white voices, with influence.
Glen, tho…😳 Also, to be clear, THE GUY CAN SING. Just in general.
It's such a joy digging up new #music by artists you love but haven't kept track of.
Case in point: I got really into #TheSlackers (#ska and related genres) around 2006 or so, going by the albums I already had. Surprise! They kept going!!
JACKIE MITTOO
Let's Put It All Together
1978 Canada reissue
One more from the great Jackie Mittoo as I wait for the swelling in my eye to go down.
The five song run here from Ram Jam to The Rattler is amazing.
JM records aren’t all that common to stumble upon.
Even reissues like this one go for about 40 CAD. #vinyl#vinylrecords#reggae#jackiemittoo#70s#70smusic#1970s#ska#dub
Song of the Day - No 323
Madness - One Step Beyond
Originally by Jamaican ska singer Prince Buster in 1964, "One Step Beyond" was covered by Madness for their 1979 debut album of the same name. The track retains its ska roots while introducing a British pop flair.
Happy Birthday to Belinda Magnus aka Pauline Black, English singer, actress, author and member of the British ska band Selecter, born on this day in 1953, Romford, England
Okay, so it's time for #JukeboxFridayNight...well, for me. Kind of. It's still morning here.
Whatever.
The theme is #AStoryTold. I'm going with a #SmashMouth B-Side called Flo which tells the story about the narrator's girlfriend who is still clearly in love with her ex named Florence (gender never specified in the song) and how it's starting to emotionally screw with him. https://songwhip.com/smash-mouth/flo
