Finally going home after a whole day of meetings.

I'd like to update my 15 VMs...

I also think I need to double-check my qemu installation, as 7.2.9 seems to be the last 7.x version (I have 7.2.7 installed).

I still have and VMs to update or reinstall.

Thinking about setting up a mirror.

SearxNG is definitely something I need to setup.

Also SNAC2 under Slackware.

Miss the good times when you could buy install discs - either from Linux magazines or directly from the maintainer. I’m a bit nostalgic, one might say.

is such a cool tool, it has local and external IP information on inxi -i, it has weather information in inxi -w. I used to think it was just a great fetch tool, but it literally does everything!

@smxi@fosstodon.org avatar

@tripplehelix I laugh every time I see someone utterly clueless say, oh, is bloated, I could do that in a 100 line shell script and it would be 100x faster. Every significant feature requires massive amounts of work, raw data collection, and unfortunately, the most boring, matching table updates, which there are no single data sources for so those are basically manually generated, using some backend tools for some. Recent complex features only work because users interested.

Updated the repo earlier with the python 3.11 upgrades, as well as pushed all the other updates needed in other repos. NOW I can focus on real updates like hyprland and updating the WebKit-gtk package and deps. Wee! https://slackware.lngn.net/

Initial python3.11 update pushed to the repo. I think it should all be good, I’ll fix up any issues later. It’s past my bed time now. Let me know if anything’s broken! 👍

Regarding the / backdoor, quoting the original mail https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2024/q1/268

"Debian and several other distributions patch openssh to support systemd notification, and libsystemd does depend on lzma."

"it is likely the backdoor can only work on glibc based systems."

So, if you are using a non-sytemd distro ( e.g. , , , ) or a non-glibc distro (e.g. ) you are most likely not affected, right?

ParadeGrotesque, to random
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

So, openssh backdoor through a patch applied by some distros to make it work with systemd, which itself is vulnerable because of a compromise of the LZMA / xz code.

Quick test on a 15 machine:

$ xz --version
xz (XZ Utils) 5.2.5
liblzma 5.2.5

$ sudo /usr/bin/ldd /usr/sbin/sshd | grep -ic lzma
0

And of course no systemd to be found.

I am having a bit of fun trying to (ahem) 'improve' the test script posted on some mailing lists, but I think Slackware is not vulnerable.

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

From the changelog:

"Sat Mar 30 18:08:12 UTC 2024
a/xz-5.6.1-i586-3.txz: Rebuilt.
[PATCH] CMake: Fix sabotaged Landlock sandbox check.

We don't build with CMake (yet), but it doesn't hurt to apply this."

I would have reverted to xz 5.2.5 but that's just me. Glad to see Pat Volkerding on top of things, as usual.

Suppose you want to run Hyprland 0.37.1 on the stable Slackware Current foundation? Use the slackware-live-current-nwg iso, available at https://rekt.lngn.net/nwg/ and get going. Thanks to Jay (@jloc0 ) and Piotr (@nwgpiotr ) for making this great combo!

Any users want to try the latest hyprland, I’m not adding it to the repo (yet) but I put the needed pkgs here: https://slackware.lngn.net/pub/staging/ install/upgrade them in your existing (x86_64) install. It works, but I haven’t tested all the things yet.

Updated dav1d, libaom, and webkit2gtk-2.44.0 for and the readme’s still read, so I’ll call these upgrades safe to push to the repo today. I’ll have to look and see if anything else has slipped past me, but I think we’re basically all up to date already, except for hyprland (and updates always break things), I’ll look into that one. https://slackware.lngn.net/pub/x86_64/slackware64-current/nwg-shell/ChangeLog.txt

Did you know the desktop hasn't had a release announcement since version 1.26 in 2021?

There still isn't an announcement, BUT

MATE 1.28 has been official since February 12th. You can get it in places like Rawhide, Cooker and Current.

This being said, I really like the fact that under everything needed to compile rrdtool is included.

These guys have a long list of stuff to be installed on other OS. Under Slackware, all that is needed is the classic invocation "configure && make && make install".

I have a news alert on Google that is configured to send me an email if someone mentioned or ...

The last two alerts received obviously did not make any sense at all, so either Google Alert is useless (which it has been for a long time, to be honest) or AI sites are increasingly pushing nonsense content down the Googleplex throat. Or both.

Methinks both. AI is going to be the end of the Internet as a useful tool.

It is a bummer that the only way to get on is through AUR. I have nothing but bad experiences of AUR in Manjaro, even if something works initially, it will break eventually.

I would love to have it in the Manjaro repos or as a . It is officially available for on Ubuntu/Debian, Fedora and OpenSuse, so it ought to be possible.

On a related note, how difficult is it to turn a .deb file into a flatpak?

I remember I got invited to a physical party that led to a very very drunk me back in the fall of 1994 when I posted a ‘that’s not ok’ remark in alt.humor.jokes

Round about the time that was the ‘right choice’ since it ‘just worked’ in a sense that the default X configuration didn’t immediately blow up your monitor. 🤘🏻

Every year, I try to learn something new and geeky and I realized recently I haven't planned something for 2024.

So there it is, in no particular order:

  • (re)Learn ZFS on using 10.0 when it comes out.

  • Wireguard, probably under 7.5 when it come out.

  • GlusterFS under - is it possible to compile and use it under Slackware 15? Can a slackbuild be made?
