I know Canonical really wants to push their stupid walled garden with Snaps, but c'mon. That's just insane. :blobfoxlaughsweat: Snaps are the reason I'll generally not recommend Ubuntu anymore. It's too much to explain to a Linux newbie why Firefox boots slowly and Steam crashes.
After a few months of maintaining my crafts-flake project, I just landed the final PR upstream in #nixpkgs which means that #rockcraft, #charmcraft and #snapcraft willl soon be readily available to all #NixOS users 😎 🚀
[Blog] Hey! Remember a month ago I mentioned there was a scam BitCoin wallet in the Snap Store. There's another one. This time I took it apart to see how it works.
Edit: It's worse - they published ten scam apps under different wallet brand names. :(
I finally put together a page that lists all the snaps I published and their up-to-date status. It's generated by a script I was previously running manually, but now it's all automated.
A Bitcoin investor was recently scammed out of 9 Bitcoin (worth around $490K) in a fake “Exodus wallet” desktop application for Linux, published in the Canonical Snap Store. This isn’t the first time; if nothing changes, it likely won’t be the last.
This is a rather long blog post to accompany @linuxmatters episode 23.
Not everything should be packaged as a snap. Some things aren't (currently or ever) suitable. So, I started a (wiki) page on the #snapcraft forum to try to outline what types of applications are appropriate and what might not be. Contributions and thoughts are welcome. ("Nothing should be a snap" will get you a block)
Want to learn snapping (packaging applications in #Snap format with #snapcraft)?
And you were not so lucky to attend a conference where our Snap workshop(s) have taken place?
Or you ware missing a Snap workshop for beginners on the #UbuntuSummit#UbuntuSummit2023? I submitted it there but it did not get accepted.
I have actually given the workshop in the week after, during Canonical's internal Engineering Sprint. So for those who want to attend it, here we go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNG8m9hesEU
