It's my day off, i needed to print a label to send something back to amazon but my printers ink ran out/dried up, so i think to myself "hey there's a little computer shop at the end of my road that I've bought from before, why not save myself some time and go buy from them instead of ordering from amazon and have to wait?" - walk to the shop and they're closed (it's only 3 PM) - end up ordering from amazon anyway for next day delivery. It's hard supporting local businesses when they aren't open.
On the plus side though, I was amazed that this now 15 year old Canon Inkjet printer just worked straight away on my #Linux Laptop. No having to download and install software like in #Windows or having to pick from a menu and hope it's supported like #MacOS - Linux just detected it as soon as it was plugged in then seconds later said it was ready to use without me having to do anything! Amazing.
New episode of Destination Linux, 1:20 hours about why printing with Linux just works! With Michael Sweet author of #CUPS and creator of driverless printing and me, leader of #OpenPrinting:
Needless to say basically all decent printers should offer Print-from-Mail, Print-from-USB, Print-from-SMB & Print-From-PDF and literally support just sending a PDF file to it.
Hey nerds! A product purchasing question.
My daughter inherited this ultra terribad HP Deskjet 4100 at university, it’s awful and they want to replace it. What’s the best non HP replacement for four students to moderately use over two years. Thanks!
It is very well maintained, by Michael Sweet, author of #CUPS and one of the principal designers and developers of IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) and so of driverless printing ...
Can anyone recommend an impact printer that still has ink ribbons that are either manufactured or are easy to DIY? I mean daisy wheel or whatever the "goofball" printers were called, not dot matrix printer. I plan on printing under #Linux, so #CUPS support would be ideal.
So yeah. Just installed this #Brother whatever DCP colour laser thingy in the office and it JustWorks™️. Prints. Scans. Makes copies. All for around 350€. No driver download or whatever needed. Weird that this is exceptional and not the default experience. Thank you, Brother!
@jwildeboer Brother is really doing well with driverless IPP printing, so their printers actually work without driver under Linux, Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS ...
Thanks to the #CUPS author Michael Sweet, as he did the principal design of IPP and driverless printing.
And there are many Brother models on the official list on #OpenPrinting (maintained by Michael Sweet):
I'm generating the image to print myself, with the correct number of pixels for the label media in question. The printer is supposed to be able to print edge-to-edge, top-to-bottom, but it always starts printing 6mm / 1/4" down from the top.

Is there a FOSS app like Printer2Go, PrintHand, PrintShare and Nokoprint? (Large printer support and printing over USB)
These apps have support for huge amount of printers and allow printing over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and most importantly, USB....
