@popey My first digital camera was also 23 years ago!, mid-2001, so exactly 22.5 years. It was an Olympus C3000Z (3 MPix, 32-96 mm eq.).
I bought it because I was running an #OpenPrinting booth on the LinuxTag for the first time, got lended a bunch of nice photo printers from Epson and also from HP and wanted to be able to demo them.
I also printed a photo taken with it in A1 size (using Mandrake Linux) from this camera for the LinuxTag, view from the Eiffel Tower ...
Now that we're all back and recovering from FOSDEM, we'd love to know two things: what were your favorite talks, and just as importantly, what were your favorite moments in between the talks? 🤔
(And no, those talks and moments don't have to be Thunderbird related! This is not a shameless ploy for attention, we promise. We'll be MUCH more obvious about those! 😜 💙 )
Noah J. Chelliah interviewed me about my #OpenPrinting work for his "Ask Noah" #podcast when he met me on the #UbuntuSummit#UbuntuSummit23 and finally posted in his episode 368. His editing was amazing. Listen to it here, starting at 47:17 min:
New episode of Destination Linux, 1:20 hours about why printing with Linux just works! With Michael Sweet author of #CUPS and creator of driverless printing and me, leader of #OpenPrinting:
I know that my work at #OpenPrinting is to make the most hated hardware less hated, but I did not know that a well-known manufacturer claims to be that their offerings of this kind of hardware are less hated than what the others offer:
Ken shouts me out when telling about printing support (11:21).
nemowei5553 complains about printing as first comment in YouTube comments, I as lead of #OpenPrinting and designer of Core Desktop's printing/scanning support explain everything
This little penguin, who I found in an adorable artisan shop in Old Town, poked his head out of the conference bag and decided to explore the last day of the #UbuntuSummit2023! Follow his adventures - and guess where he might ultimately be going - in this thread!
These events are all about meeting the amazing people in our community, and the first person we found was @till! Our little penguin got introduced to printing on Linux from one of the people who makes it possible! Till reminded us to check out the sticker table and to get some caffeine before we went to make new friends. #OpenPrinting#UbuntuSummit2023#UbuntuSummit
Hey nerds! A product purchasing question.
My daughter inherited this ultra terribad HP Deskjet 4100 at university, it’s awful and they want to replace it. What’s the best non HP replacement for four students to moderately use over two years. Thanks!
It is very well maintained, by Michael Sweet, author of #CUPS and one of the principal designers and developers of IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) and so of driverless printing ...
So yeah. Just installed this #Brother whatever DCP colour laser thingy in the office and it JustWorks™️. Prints. Scans. Makes copies. All for around 350€. No driver download or whatever needed. Weird that this is exceptional and not the default experience. Thank you, Brother!
@jwildeboer Brother is really doing well with driverless IPP printing, so their printers actually work without driver under Linux, Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS ...
Thanks to the #CUPS author Michael Sweet, as he did the principal design of IPP and driverless printing.
And there are many Brother models on the official list on #OpenPrinting (maintained by Michael Sweet):
It also felt cool that I was probably one of the only customers asking to reproduce a drawing they were formally allowed to use thanks to #CreativeCommons ❤️
@remidupre@davidrevoy chocolate powder (or whatever) printers actually exist, I have seen one in the #Wien Mitte the Mall shopping center 5 (walking) minutes from my home! On a #Nespresso booth which is there this week for a launch of a new machine. The printer seems to be the same model as the one in the Storehouse in Dublin, but print quality on beer seems to be better than on Cappuccino...
There is a great python project named 'system-config-printer' which is part of the OpenPrinting. They are looking for new developers and co-maintainer. As far as I can see, the project can use all sorts of help, from minor UI design to some python debugging and also migrating to GTK4. If you think you can give them a hand and invest some time into this project, please don't hesitate.
