Don't listen to me! Seriously! I'm just some dude on the internet. I just talk. They let anyone make an account here. No vetting! So when I talk about Angola prison farm being a slave plantation, you don't have to listen to me. I might just be making it all up!

It's not like I'm a Pulitzer prize winning journalist or anything. You should listen to Pulitzer prize winning journalists instead. One is good, two are better. Like these two:

@mhoye not to derail, but people need to understand that for food stamps do the same exact thing.

In the state that I live in if you have work requirements but you can’t find a job you can volunteer for the state. A few years ago those volunteer positions included taking calls at the food stamp department/.
Work requirements require you to put in 80 hours a month. At the time, the most you could get in food stamps as a single person was $203.

$203/80 = $2.875 per hour in FOOD ONLY PAYMENT. So you’re not getting gas money to get to your call-center job, or laundry money so you have clean clothes to wear. You’re getting $203 that you can only spend on food.

Why would the state ever hire call center representatives when they can just pay poor people $2.87 an hour in snap benefits?

I think people pushed back because last time I had a redetermination I was complaining about how welfare recipients have access to the list of the medications I keep in my house if I’m required to have the medication names attached to the expenses to be able to deduct the medical expense & she told me they haven’t had volunteers in the office in years (right because y’all were remote for years, but ok)

(and listen I wasn’t trying to say that I think people who need DHHS services are naturally criminals, especially because I am one of those people. All I was saying was that the criminals I know around here get benefits and I’m very uncomfortable with them knowing I keep oxycodone and Adderall in my apartment just so that I can deduct the medical expenses for those things.)

Those who are voting for for are actually working less hours than those requirements call for.

"The is scheduled to be in session in Washington a total of 133 days this year. The will be in session about the same amount or a few days more.

But if you’re an ordinary with two weeks of vacation and federal holidays off, you’re likely clocking in around 240 days a year at the office."

Although I do understand that some work is done when is not in session, it is not required.

In summation. These fucking sociopaths do not deserve a place on this planet. or It doesn't seem to matter anymore as both parties consistently put the needs of themselves and their donors above the needs of their constituents.
That being said, I fully recognize that Republicans are far and above the worst and should be liquefied err liquidated.

If the is right, may have tricked a little

"An estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released late Tuesday said that while the new work requirements in would save money, the added benefits pushed by Democrats would cost more—and add almost 80,000 people to the rolls in an average month

"Under the bill, veterans, homeless people and young people aging out of foster care would be exempted"

Maximus, Inc
Annual revenue over $4B
Annual profit over $200M

is the biggest of a list of companies that profit off aid for the poor: America Works, Equus (ResCare)

These companies are Brett Favre on more steroids: taking money that’s supposed to go to the , and directing it to the rich.

It sounds like a reasonable idea: the GOP wants to require people age 50-55 without kids to work if they want to get food stamps.

But there are a few problems with painting that group as slackers: most of those people already work, and most of those who don't work aren't working because they are caring for kids or elders or dealing with significant health issues.

Don Moynihan is the person to read about why work requirements for make zero sense. Many people would lose access to healthcare due to the difficulty of meeting the reporting requirements, and with absolutely no upside for labor force participation. It's a policy position that is as illogical as it is inhumane.

Why is the financial well-being of the entire country dependent on cruel nonsense like this?

There are already work requirements on assistance programs. And they’re already significant.

TANF already has a 2 year limit. One of the requirements is to work or attend a workforce classes to get benefits.

Republicans show again and again that everything is transactional. Even caring about people who are less fortunate. "We'll 'care' if you do something in return for it." Pathetic.

I’ve often complained that when the US “ended welfare as we know it” (in 1996) no one kept track of what happened to the people who were on welfare. How many lost their apartments? Became drug addicts? Went to jail? Died?

There’s no doubt in my mind all of these things happened as a consequence. But we’ll never know the numbers. People with money and power didn’t want to talk about it. They didn’t want to know.

The federal law passed in 1996 ended welfare as an entitlement program
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Responsibility_and_Work_Opportunity_Act

As covered in the reporting I linked, companies that make money off lobby the US for more.

It's both: states decide what to do with the money, but only within the rules set by federal law--so contact all your reps

"Under the TANF block grant, the federal government requires states to (1) meet the annual work participation rates determined by the federal government and (2) ensure that every recipient is working (as defined by the state) as soon as the state determines he or she is able or after 24 months of benefit receipt, whichever is earlier. States that do not meet the federal requirements may be sanctioned financially"
