"Despite the rising usage figures and online interest, the quality of the Marketplace, much like the rest of Facebook, seems to have deteriorated in recent years.

Scottish bank TSB reported that 60% of all purchase fraud cases originated on Marketplace last year. They also found that a third of ads on the site appear to be scams. Vehicle parts, phones, shoes and clothing, and game consoles appear to be the most scammed items."

You know the oligarchs are getting annoyed about something when the Wall St Journal writes about it.

Plus you have the problem of fakes, having to pay shipping for returned goods that were sold by vendors NOT using Amazon Logistics...a real spoiler, if the article came from China!

Why not use a national e-tailer like or , etc.?

Really interesting perspective from , blaming the 2008 financial crisis on the debt ceiling.

As they tell it: If we didn't have a debt ceiling, Fannie Mae wouldn't have been privatized, and wouldn't have facilitated massive investment in mortgage-backed securities, counting on the federal government to bail them out if the worst came to pass, which it did.

If you have the money and want to donate to Marketplace (business & economics radio show and podcast) at American Public Media, today's the day to do it:

There's an odd social phenomenon tied to the "marketplace of ideas." It always starts with a stated intent to give voice to the marginalized, and it always ends with the establishment and protection of xenophobic hate speech against those same marginalized people.

We are broken.

If you're in the market to buy an EV, you probably think they're really expensive.

But most carmakers aren't profiting off EVs. At all. In fact they're losing money.

Takes time to achieve economies of scale with new technology.

"EV prices today are set with initial losses in mind. 'They’re trading off: how much money are we willing to lose in order to gain market share and brand credibility in the EV space.'"

I’ve often complained that when the US “ended welfare as we know it” (in 1996) no one kept track of what happened to the people who were on welfare. How many lost their apartments? Became drug addicts? Went to jail? Died?

There’s no doubt in my mind all of these things happened as a consequence. But we’ll never know the numbers. People with money and power didn’t want to talk about it. They didn’t want to know.
