Which they don’t have the power to do unilaterally, at all.

It isn’t happening, kids, sorry.

This requires the consent of all 10 provinces and both houses.

The incredibly racist open hostility to indigenous viceroys by that province is really a massive L PR-wise.

To be clear: there is a valid reason provinces don’t get to control these appointments.

They are a check against abuse of power, despite their unwillingness to use the reserve powers they’re given.

That was the deal that got the provinces the not-withstanding clause.

Is willing to give that up?

And before anyone even tries… no, cannot argue it isn’t bound by the constitution.

It implicitly accedes to it every single time it invokes the not-withstanding clause contained within it.

The Lieutenant Governors of the provinces aren’t employed by them, are not responsible to them, and are not paid by them.

Quebec simply has no input at this point. They should have negotiated better in the 80s. (A satisfying point to reiterate, as a Newfoundlander)

The last LG from who wasn’t a white Francophone finished his term 89 years ago.

But the day after an indigenous person is appointed to the role they suddenly have a problem with the office that warrants legislating an end to it. 🤔

The govt could easily free up $3.75M to sweeten the deal with striking workers by simply rolling back their absurd 30% raise they gave themselves (on a base salary that already exceeded $100k/year).

Again: it’s hard to emphasize enough how irregular and shady it is for a sitting legislature to grant itself a raise that immediately takes effect.

It’s just not something that happens in real democracies.

As parents scramble to figure out what to do with the teacher strike next week I will point out, yet again, that the not only cut taxes to the middle class this year, but also gave themselves 30% raises in the National Assembly.

They could have paid for these raises. They just don’t want to.

(The racial and gender makeup of the nursing and teaching workforces might have something to do with that.)

Apparently suddenly has a problem with xenophobic authoritarian nationalism.

They must not look in the mirror all that often.

A Montréal restaurant worker says she was forced to quit after her boss told her she can’t wear a mask at work. The restaurant says it doesn't require workers to be mask-free, but the case raises questions about workers' rights and what constitutes a safe work environment.
