One of the West Kennett Avenue stones beside the B4003; the remaining stone of the destroyed Falkner's stone circle; and two from Avebury. On a rainy day at the end of May 2011.
"Standing here, in the rain
Maybe the weather will change again..."
A little bit of Avebury for today's #StandingStoneSunday. This visit in May 2011 at the end of a walk from Wroughton airfield that took in Barbary Castle hillfort, Fyfield Down (The Polisher) and Devil's Den. I like Avebury best as the end point of a walk over the Downs, with time to appreciate the landscape.
Three stones of the southern inner circle on the left, two massive stones of the great circle on the right.
Off to Wiltshire and a Neolithic chambered tomb for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Devil's Den below Fyfield Down is a reconstructed chamber, originally it would have been covered by an earthen mound. It's a lovely walk here from Avebury or The Ridgeway, taking in the stone river of the Mother's Jam.
A misty, mizzly day in the northeastern quadrant of Avebury henge for #StandingStoneSunday
There was a secondary stone circle and "cove" in this part of the site, within the great circle and henge earthwork. The Cove stones are on the left, one of the surviving stones of the secondary circle on the right.
A double row of large sarsens, it once extended all the way from The Sanctuary timber circle to Avebury henge. Fragmentary remains still exist along the road from The Sanctuary. This stone is close to Avebury, with Waden Hill rising behind.
On December 12th, #SaveStonehengeWHS will be taking the #UKGovernment to court over the unlawfulness of the Stonehenge Tunnel Proposal, which will cause 'permanent and irreversible damage' to the #WorldHeritage site.
If this tunnel goes ahead, which is intended to 'solve traffic problems', #UNESCO would take away world heritage status from both #Stonehenge & #Avebury.
Another #Avebury shot for #StandingStoneSunday from the largest stone circle in the world. It was a delight to be there again early this month with my old school friend, Lorne. The large bank and ditch were build around 4600 years ago with the stone circle being placed soon after that. A beautiful place that’s full of magic. #StoneCircle ##ancientsites#wiltshire#AncientLandscapes#stonecircles
This has given me a smile today, starting using Wiltshire Gazette n' Herald's ad-building tool to promote Tom Robinson's megalith demolition services in the Avebury area 🙂
Next thing you know I'm speaking to the marketing solutions team. Competitive prices, with luck I'll see this through!
Read the next in this thread to find out more about Tom Robinson and his legacy.
For #StandingStoneSunday here’s a few more of the stones from Avebury in Wiltshire from my visit two weeks ago today. It’s an amazing place and well looked after by the National Trust, who have the difficult job of making the site accessible to the thousands of people that want to see it each year, but also protecting it from west and erosion and damage. Despite the visitor numbers, it’s a place that maintains its magic. #StoneCircle#Avebury#wiltshire#magic#ancientsites#neolithic
