Saw a little Grass Dart and until today I did not know they existed. The wings look like they were designed in Sweden, so elegant and sleek.

Big day in Wangdue Phodrang Dzong on Friday. Locals turning up for special blessings and wearing their finest. Bhutanese know how to bling it up for the Buddha.

Did see a few butterflies today as well. This teeny little fella never gave me a look at the upper wing artwork, but was amazed to zoom in close and discover a thin little edging of blue scales.

The detail in butterflies is just astounding to me. I had no idea that was happening right before our eyes.

All these butterfly shots taken with the Sigma 105mm F2.8 Macro, pushed to F2.8 because I love the shallow depth of field.

Soooooo amazing

ewen,

The whole fuzzy jaw vibe is definitely growing on me.

Butterflies with beards (and rings).

Ypthima and it's rings

ewen,

Honestly struggling to see a downside to butterflies.

ewen,

I ended up chasing a LOT of sapphires today, and got to photograph very very few. This little buddy posed on a twig for me, so that was a treat!

This is a close-up at 100% of the wing section, so you can see the scaly bits that create this wonderful design. Note the hairs in addition to scales.

ewen,

I love going through the photos at the end of the day and finding little gems like this that I totally forgot happened.

Another sapphire I think. I love it when you get a hint of the upper wing hues.

Cannot believe our cameras can capture this stuff. My blurry eyes sees none of it without the gear.

ewen,

When the local moths are even more colourful than the dancing monks! Just in awe of these miniature moments of nature flittering past me every time I take a walk outside.

Red with black and yellow spots. Green with yellow and black spots. The stuff of nightmares. Nature is out of control.

Gonna drop a collection of toots here with pictures from the Haa Festival in Bhutan this weekend. Lovely folks. Lovely culture. Lovely momos!

First photo is my man Tshering who is the reason I'm here.

ewen,

Every festival has chams (spiritual dances) at the center. Bring in the good luck, push away the evil.

Momo magic! Little balls of delight. Sometimes cheesy. Sometimes beefy. Always tasty!

ewen,

This lovely lady was one of the dancers on the main stage. Her hubby was one of the masked dancers too. They have to take turns to hold their sleeping baby all day!

My day was absolutely gorgeous.

ewen,

Friend of mine took me to see where the newly opened "Trans Bhutan Trail" begins, near the cliff hanging temple of Juneydrak.

So I photographed fern leaves. He's very patient with me this particular friend.

ewen,

Got a glimpse of a Himalayan Pikas today and it was marvellous!

ewen,

Been a while since I've added to this thread. I've been taking a few lately but not quite 100% happy with them. Here's an iconic idea, but in Bhutan this time :)

ewen,

This little plant was sooooo groovy and sooooo weird and just running amuck by the roadside like a weed. May not even be a plant, might be an alien invasion.

ewen,

I love the opportunity that flora presents for photography at the macro level.

Was joking with a friend of mine that his talent in landscape composition would be well served on flora, and with a far more modest travel budget.

ewen,

Looking for a composition in a field of flowers, like panning for gold. As my mind relaxes and begins to flow, the images start to make sense.

Found a bunch of these guys right next to the highway when I stopped to shoot a rice field. Peachy! Was pretty excited to get a chance to get close. Always amazed how some butterflies are indifferent to a huge big camera lens.

ewen,

Stopped to shoot some flowers on the drive today but got distracted by the bees. This little fella was loaded down with pollen sacks but still going in for more.

Dialed in my "birds in flight" custom setting for these shots, because the bees never really sit still. F2.8 with 1/2000th sec exposure and auto ISO.

Not just loaded but hairy.
Just a superb level of adaptation going on here.

So much beauty today. Lots of yummy food, lovely people, got a great portrait of our cheesemaker and even got to spend an hour walking downhill through the forest eating wild strawberries and chasing butterflies.

ewen,

Your regular reminder that nature is terrifying and should be avoided at all costs.
