Have your #travel plans changed since #COVID? Ours have - when we have gone on holiday, we've stayed in the UK and explored our own islands. The result - discovering my ancestral home of #Skye, the prehistoric wonders of #Derbyshire, the beauty of #Cornwall and the delights of #NorthWales.
The things you miss when you take the plane to travel from Cologne to Helsinki, instead of using train and ferry:
– Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm
– Breathtaking views of Northern Europe
– Incredibly delicious food and super friendly staff onboard the swedish high speed train
– Sleeping onboard a ship while crossing the baltic sea
– Europe‘s longest railway bridge
My fifth time taking the California Zephyr on @amtrak! Slow travel is my favorite form of travel. This is my roomette - sleeps two people bunk style. Happy to answer any questions if you have them. I'll be posting throughout my trip. #slowtravel#amtrak#californiazephyr
I feel a bit more excited about train travel in Canada seeing Via getting new train equipment, and hopefully High Frequency Rail comes to be built sooner than later! #ViaRail#SlowTravel#Canada#TrainTravel
I feel like being much smaller countries, plus the atrocities of the two world wars playing out in Europe (destroying major infrastructure), "help(ed)" in providing a ground framework for rail as it is in Europe.
Arrived at 02:45 ahead of latest check-in at 03:00.
Very clear port signage for IRL sailing which seems to be a completely separate quay to those for the UK.
Appears on google maps as DFDS Dunkerque-Rosslare.
This is primarily a freight service and so it’s not surprising that we haven’t seen any passenger facilities at the queueing lanes.
Great 24hr direct crossing from the far north of France on the DFDS Regina Seaways ferry from Dunkirk to Rosslare. Arrived in Rosslare on-schedule at 04:00.
Very clean and modern ship. Regular passengers vastly outnumbered by truck drivers. Three full meals included plus small snacks on embarkation and disembarkation.
Peaceful atmosphere on board with high quality public spaces but some female travellers may be uncomfortable being in a tiny minority of those present.
Don't mind me... just spending a sleepless night browsing ocean shipping lines. Plotting routes from Vancouver to Asia to Europe. #lowcarbon#slowtravel#CO2
On 7 May my wife & I packed up our camper van and headed off to Scotland where we toured for the next 11 weeks. I also took a complete break from social media.
3 things I recommend:
Slow travel - if you can afford the luxury of time, go slow.
Scotland - I can think of no better place to have spent 11 weeks exploring.
Social media - the break has been welcome, allowing a complete refresh while focusing on the real world around me with mine own eyes.
I said I wouldn’t travel abroad again this year but I’m now going to visit my brother and his family in Rotterdam in August.
Ferry Dublin-Holyhead, train Holyhead-London Euston, overnight in London and then St Pancras-Rotterdam Centraal the following evening. Return is with my brother and his wife in a Nissan Leaf EV on the Dunkirk-Rosslare DFDS ferry.
This lovely lady was one of the dancers on the main stage. Her hubby was one of the masked dancers too. They have to take turns to hold their sleeping baby all day!
