First hour of 20 hours of travel before I get to eat delicious food, enjoy tropical weather and see my loved ones.

I’ve decided my first meal when I arrive will be ‘zi char’. Zi char is 煮炒, also known as ‘dai pai dong’ in Hong Kong, the type of Chinese high heat cooking that warms the hearts of pyromaniacs.

Until then, there’s TSA, airport experiences, airplane food (thankfully not terrible on Singapore Airlines), and travel anxiety (I hate covid-era travel, obviously)

Pre-covid, Thai Airways used to offer the "Thai Set" instead of regular white-people airline food and it was the best!

I miss the good old days :)

When I scroll back through two decades of blogging I can discover having written and created some really interesting stuff that I'd forgotten about.

I'm realising I'm often in too much of a hurry onwards to the next topic or subject of interest, never stopping to appreciate and celebrate my own work. My curiosity makes me jump ahead.

Always impressed by people who can stick with the same topic or even framework for years and years.I'm even bad at marketing my book because my brain has left those ideas behind - writing them down for me meant finishing that train of thought - and moved on.

Not sure what I want to say with this. I think we're all just different and that's okay.

ewen,

@axbom

You wanted to say this because I wanted to hear it. Thankyou.

Once I get good at something, I get bored with it. Not a great way to get rich when you change stream over and over.

Lucky for my wife I'm still learning to be a better husband, so I haven't grown bored of that yet :)

ewen,

I get caught up in what we've already lost. It hits me, and stops me from moving forward where I can.

Imagining a better future, focusing on what that looks like and looking for a path towards that future... that's the only thing that's ever pulled me out of the quagmire. It reframes my entire brain. It lets me enjoy the positive possibilities. It gives my energy somewhere to flow.

Where your mind goes your body will follow.

ewen,

I saw another post here today about making "random acts of kindness". Also good, especially when coupled with imagining a better future.

Sometimes my kindness is too calculated. I think about who needs help the most or where a few dollars will do the most good. That way if thinking actually feeds into feeling helpless, not empowered. Just spending your day randomly surprising people with acts of kindness seems like a better way to move forward.

I remember when I first got started in photography, and I knew my photos were ok but not brilliant.

But I also knew my design and web skills were above par, so I could do a half decent job of presenting my work to look its best. I've gotten better at photography over the years, but still have to say that curating and presenting are actually more important than capturing.

Style matters.

ewen,

Also should point out that I'm no genius when it comes to websites. My biggest talent is perseverance.

I keep at it. I keep polishing the CSS. I keep tinkering and learning. I put the hours in. It can take days to achieve any real progress, but sometimes it all just comes together and I love reaching that distant shore and feeling like I've created something of substance.

This page has been my latest obsession. Still one major component left to complete...

ewen,

Gathering your photos onto a website and experimenting with the layout and experience is really worthwhile as a photographer.

Social media is less so. The way your work appears on someone else's app is totally out of your control. Not to mention the algorithms in play. The constraints are artificial, and unrewarding.

Having your own website is an excellent way to express yourself, and it's unimpeded by pathological billionaires.

I’m reading this book that I picked up for $1 in Boulder last month, called “Crucial Conversations”.

It’s about improving how you communicate in difficult situations.

And there’s this list of questions to reflect on when you feel yourself getting defensive in a conversation:

  • what do I really want for myself?
  • what do I really want for others?
  • what do I really want for the relationship?
  • how would I behave if I really wanted those results?

That last question really shook me

ewen,

@mariyadelano

Found myself being much more aware of this after getting out of a bad relationship. Was living with someone who simply had to "be right" all the time. It was exhausting being around them. There was no room for anyone else in the relationship.

Imagine working with someone like that.

Have found that it's easier to de-escalate people who are stressed when I simply listen first and let them express what's going through their mind. I don't have to be right, just have to be present.

ewen,

@mariyadelano

It works better when both people are aware and considerate :) Most things in life do.

Running tours for a few decades, with mostly very intelligent and high performing individuals, has given me a chance to appreciate the complexity of humans. The main thing I've learned is that I have a lot to learn.

Ps...
The trouble with books is you have to wait for the right time for them to come along. If you're not ready, you're not ready.

ewen,

@mariyadelano

Love that you remember where you bought it from too. The book from Boulder!

    People keep telling me that is amazing for proofreading text and improving scientific writing.

    I just gave a section of a grant proposal and it made 11 suggestions, none of which were worth keeping (often adding or removing a comma, or repeating a preposition in a list).

    More interestedly, a number of its suggestions were identical to my originals.

    When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s, I watched Star Trek: The Next Generation. I soaked up the vibes of a high-tech, utopian future. I internalized the trajectory we were on was good, that we had reached the End of History. There might be a few bumps on the road, but the direction was inevitable and the destination was inexorable.

    It turns out that the fastest a human being has ever traveled was 39,897 kilometers per hour. That was the crew of the Apollo 10 mission returning to earth. That happened on 26 May, 1969.

    Fifty-four years ago. We peaked more than half a century ago.

    I’ve seen a lot of apocalyptic thoughts on my timeline and in the “Trending” feed lately.

    I guess it’s time to bring back the piece I wrote in June as Canada was also burning, Trump was getting charged with crimes, my native Ukraine was facing increased attacks, and the tech world was melting down all around me.

    Look: while I talk about marketing in particular, many of my points will apply to anyone posting on the internet or creating anything for the public.
