The saga of Waverley Park — Melbourne's car-dependent suburban AFL stadium with a planned seated capacity of over 150,000 (not a typo!)

A really good run down by @philip on the plans by the AFL (and its predecessor, the VFL) to build the world's largest stadium in outer-suburban Melbourne.

Unfortunately, a planned railway line past the stadium to Rowville was never built. That meant a massive 25,000-spot car park as the only real means to get there.

While most of it has been demolished and redeveloped for housing, the oval itself still used by Hawthorn Football Club as a training and administration centre.

@nictea @philip @fuck_cars Even the 903 SmartBus only runs a 15 minute timetable during the day, which is less than the minimum 10-minute service busses should be running.

And other services in the area, like the 737 (Croydon to Boronia to Knox to Glen Waverley to Monash Uni) is a 40-minute-plus frequency during most of the day.

And people wonder why more residents in the outer suburbs use public transport...

Warning: This post is about to make you feel very old.

Think for a moment where you watched the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics.

Well, one of the busses from those games is now on display at the Sydney Bus Museum.

But wait, what is a bus from the Sydney Olympics doing in a transport museum?

Well, because the 2000 Olympics were held almost a quarter of a century ago.

I did warn you this post would make you feel old.

@iuculano Thanks Joe, I have a dozen tabs open, as I read Halifax Municipality pages and the amount of meetings, raises, bad decisions and the proposed Tax increase, while furiously typing.
I can't go for groceries, without breaking down in tears. All the homeless that upset police and council have been moved 4 minutes from my door, between my driveway and my weekly grocery pickup. COUNCILLORS aren't crying,, OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND, next Agenda Item talk, Not helping

Anyone want to guess, the costs to host a meeting, for a group of 16, that collectively earn $25,600,000 a year? (Plus unk staffers salaries)

Weekends = 104 days + 14 public holidays
They have been working on the same problem for approximately 1000 hours to resolve just one problem? And they cannot find a solution.

3 Years- NADA
- HOLD MEETINGS OUTSIDE?

TIME TO REPLACE THEM ALL!

Our bus system is so terrible that if I'm an hour walk away from home without my car, I will walk home.

We desperately need better public transportation.

How bus use has changed in London & in big cities outside of London since deregulation. (from which London was exempt).

From @thomasforth (posted at the other place)

Its quite an extraordinary 'natural experiment' - from which we can draw the conclusion (without too much difficulty) that is not the way forward if are to be part of the

(and don't get me started on exceptionalism....)

Kiss and fly charges aren't a solution to the problem!

> These are fees charged for dropping off someone as close to a terminal as possible.

You should absolutely have a hub and spoke infrastructure around international airports.

Public transportation that can deliver you to the airport terminal is the best thing ever when you need to fly a lot.
