I received an email from Google telling me they're updating their terms. I think the account was related to the #hackerspaces mailing-list. I clicked a link to refuse the #TermsOfService: I successfully entered the email verification code. Now it asked me for a telephone number, which I refuse to give, since I simply want out of their service. They refuse to allow me to refuse their ToS.
At #37c3 they have IRC, and Matrix for text and for voice they setup their own LTE/2G/3G/SIP/DECT network where you bring whatever phone-like device and pick a 4 digit phone number.
Meanwhile in the USA for #defcon they just paid Discord money and told everyone to accept their privacy policy, and even the DC Privacy Village asks people to sign up for Slack and Google.
People ask why I fly to CCC from the USA. It is because that is the closest place to find a thriving hacker culture.
Hey other #hackspace board members here on mastodon.
What software do you use to manage your hackspace?
Like administrate members, administrate payments and all the stuff you have to deal with in your space?
Dear #hackerspaces, if you are on the fediverse/mastadon could you update your data on wiki.hackerspace.org? Right now only ~20 hackerspaces has this filled in. On this list ( https://infosec.exchange/@catsalad/110857886745045455 ) there are 87, so some work to do fellow hackers ;-)
This morning I got woken by an emergency alert. The building my hackerspace @pixelbar is in, was on fire. Soon after the news reached that building was not savable.
Keilewerf 1 in Rotterdam and all spaces inside are gone. These included Hobbyists, companies and our hackerspace.
Pixelbar will need to find a new space and equipment and has started a crowdfunding.
Last year the textile guild first floated the idea to order a Kniterate, a computerized knitting machine to add to Noisebridge’s manufacturing abilities. We couldn’t cover the costs, and found people willing to help us order an industrial knitting machine from China with similar capabilities.
We passed our order in May, and it’s now on a ship that will soon arrive in Oakland. To our knowledge, this is the only industrial knitting machine in the Bay Area that will be available to the public. Stay tuned for updates, comment if you’re interested in learning to use it, and get in touch if you are a makerspace interested in getting their own!
