Homeschooling during COVID times was a dystopian chaos
Homeschooling during the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a dystopian chaos for many families. The conventional school experience, characterized by lively classrooms and face-to-face interactions, underwent a stark transformation.
Someone over on Bluesky posted this link to a list of resources they made for #HomeSchooling alumni.
While a LOT of homeschoolers go into College, or straight into a career, there are so many different ways to homeschool, and let’s be honest - some homeschoolers come from a bad family situation and this resource even covers that.
Hell, I think a lot of it is good for anyone just hitting adulthood. 😂
Haven’t read whole thing through yet tho.

A fair bit of train(s) rides this morning - to get to #Yuasa in #Wakayama
Will grab lunch first and then some walk around. Original plan was to spend a couple of days - perhaps in Shirahama but the cold wasn't too helpful for the beach or camping so just a day trip #Japan#Travel #DasInYuasa
4/4 I won't belabor this (though Yuasa thread continues) but after the mixing, we saw other bits of the facility and then, and then (to the kids surprise!) we got to mix up and bottle our own (koji pre-inoculated) soy sauce! With instructions to aerate etc and to be filtered in a year. This took about 30+ mins
A terrific soy sauce factory tour and making experience (also ahem #homeschooling )
I don't know if #homeschooling is actually a trending topic, but I was homeschooled and it was NOT religiously motivated or centered. My parents just had a distaste for public school that did not seem to be politically motivated.
So I would like to say that it STILL SUCKED and did long-lasting damage to my education, self-esteem, and socialization skills.
It also resulted in an inadequate amount of proper socialization at various formative ages, which had disproportionately dire consequences.
Laura Meckler: How a true believer’s flawed research helped legitimize home schooling: Brian Ray says home-schooled students do better. His daughter tells a different story.
"One of Ray’s harshest critics is his oldest daughter, who has been estranged from her parents since 2016, when she decided to divorce her husband. Ziebart said after that, her parents 'shunned' her. In an 18-page email heavy with scripture, he told her that she had not shown “biblical grounds” for her divorce."
How a true believer’s flawed research helped legitimize home schooling - Biggest proponent of homeschooling practiced child abuse and got away with it. https://wapo.st/41dMz3T#HomeSchooling
We have to prove that we do some art at least once a month for school. My son likes to paint and colour, but on his terms and his topics. I manage to sneak in one ‘month themed’ topic once a month to meet school requirements 😂. Quickly painted a Christmas tree today before slapping some paint on pictures of penguins while saying they are dirty and need a bath 😂. It counts enough to check off requirements, he has no goal to be an artist I feel. #homeschooling
Christian Indoctrination in Homeschooling
A Bit Fruity by matt bernstein
"The number of kids being homeschooled today is more than double of what it was four years ago, and nobody is making the rules. While the religious right is convinced that political indoctrination is rampant in public schools, we take a look at where teaching is actually flying off the rails."
Honestly, I already worry that some home school kids are deprived of a sound curriculum & exposure to a wide range of viewpoints
But now religious parents claim their religious rights are infringed if the state does not pay for religious materials to teach religion to their children.
Ryan Burge reports on survey data released recently by the group FIRE re: home-schooled children in the US. Some takeaways:
"An incredibly small share of 18-25 year old college going folks were homeschooled. Slightly more than one in one hundred."
"Protestants are significantly overrepresented in the home school population. Fully 26% of home schoolers identify as Protestant, compared to only 10% of those in the public school."
"Home schooled kids are more likely to be white compared to those who went to public school. Nearly three quarters of home schoolers were white, while 12% were Black, and 9% were Hispanic."
"The home school group are significantly more likely to identify as Republican."
#Christian#homeschooling is the definition of the blind leading the blind. What makes functionally #ignorant, Christian #parents believe they are qualified and capable of providing a comprehensive #K12#education to their #children? These are people who believe the #Earth is 6000 years old; that #dinosaurs lived alongside Man; that #evolution is a lie; that women are inferior to men. These are objectively stupid people who aren't qualified to educate anyone.
