Fantastic article from @thenation concerning how the far-right attempts to twist and bastardize #MLK's words + writings for their own racist, fascist agenda:
I learned about Martin Luther King Jr. when I was young and I was impressed how he stood up to racists. Later, I learned about Malcolm X and the Black Panthers and how MLK was considered more palatable by the white establishment. Much later I learned about his lesser known quotes and speeches railing against white liberals like me and it only made me admire him more.
"Oh, let us turn our thoughts today
To Martin Luther King
And recognize that there are ties between us
All men and women living on the Earth
Ties of hope and love
Sister and brotherhood
That we are bound together
In our desire to see the world
Become a place in which our children
Can grow free and strong
We are bound together by the task
That stands before us
And the road that lies ahead
We are bound, and we are bound… "
Here's Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space as transporter chief Lt. Palmer in #StarTrekTNG S6.E24 Second Chances (The one where Riker was duplicated.) Nichols visited the set during filming of Jemison's scenes. 1st #StarTrek episode LeVar Burton directed. Jemison was the science mission specialist on the STS-47 Spacelab J flight, which launched September 12, 1992. While in space, Jemison began each shift by informing Mission Control in Houston "Hailing frequencies open." #mlkday A clip from the documentary Woman In Motion: Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek And The Remaking Of NASA (2019) Watch it free here. https://tubitv.com/movies/594556/woman-in-motion-nichelle-nichols-star-trek-and-the-remaking-of-nasa#StarTrek#mlkday
“So today capitalism has outlived its usefulness. It has brought about a system that takes necessities from the masses to give luxuries to the classes.” —Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” —Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race. Even before there were large numbers of Nеgroes on our shores, the scar of racial hatred had already disfigured colonial society… We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its Indigenous population. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade.”
Spending #MLK day reading about abolition politics and dreaming up how I will engage my students in critically thinking about incarceration and criminal legal systems seems like a good way to honor the day.
LMAO i just caught myself writing "good morn'" but it's almost 3pm. that's what happens after 3 days of forcing myself to sleep to heal from a hell of week of surgery and #chemo.
🗣️ 📣 AN REMIND EVERYBODY THERE'S A #MLKday BECAUSE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR WAS ASSASSINATED FOR WANTING TO END POVERTY. HE DIDN'T DIE IN HIS SLEEP LIKE THOSE FASCIST GHOULS RONALD REAGAN, GEORGE H. BUSH AND HENRY KISSINGER. HE WAS ASSASSINATED. BECAUSE HE WANTED TO END POVERTY. NEVER LET THEM FORGET THAT. EVER!
