If there are any CIFS/SMB experts floating around, does it seem accurate or absurd that deleting a file in a folder tree has a different effect on the timestamps of the folders "above" it than deleting a folder?
If dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4/hello.txt is the structure, dir1 is "above" dir3.
I do have to say, one thing I personally enjoy is fiddling with smaller systems.
May it be a #NUC or a #ThinkStation or maybe a #OptiPlex - there is so much one can do without spending loads of money on electricity!
And every time I found myself using a smaller system I deploy either a #BSD or a #Linux distro.
My needs are not huge.
Some programming, web surfing and sometimes a video.
Looking forward to using my newly purchased laptop 😎
And of course: It will run a free operating system! 🙂
@Anniiii
Same here. Got a older PC running with vanilla #FreeBSD as my #NAS - it was free from work 🙂
Btw: I very much like reusing older hardware. And as a retro computing fan that is very close to my heart so to speak 👍
In meinem Mesh-WLAN mit einer Fritzbox und mehreren Repeatern verbinden sich bestimmte Geräte zwar mit dem WLAN, nicht aber mit dem Internet. Was ist da los?
Seriously, this. My partner and I have all of our music backed up to our family NAS, and then we can listen to it wherever we have internet. So many of the benefits of streaming, but without locking both listeners and artists into exploitative ecosystems.
@xgranade
Combine that #NAS with a self-hosted #VPN and a #Jellyfin server, and you can have streaming music wherever you go. I've got the NAS and VPN in place already, now I just need to spin up a Jellyfin #Docker container and point it at my music library.
Introducing the ZimaBlade, an affordable, low power, single board computer that's great for a home server, homelabs, tinkering, NAS, retro gaming, or even a dual boot desktop system like me.
OMG, building a NAS is not cheap! It costs $1,765 for 30TB space in RAID 5!
Synology 5-bay DiskStation DS1522+ $725
5 x IronWolf 8TB NAS Drives: $890
NVMe 400GB SSD: $150 #NAS#storage
I just paid under $300 for a #desktop#miniPC with 9 CORES up to 3.8Ghz, 16GB of RAM, and dual 2.5GbE NICs. It's even got a GPU with video decoding so it can transcode Plex. What a time to #homelab
The question now is; do I install #pfSense or #OPNsense on it and just keep having the most overbuilt #router of all time, or do I attempt a #Proxmox installation and give myself a whole world of footguns to play with? It'd really be a shame not to at least plug a drive into it and serve #Plex, maybe #NAS. One day I might get bored and want to #homeassistant, who knows! 9 cores, so much room for activities!!!
@9to5linux is it suitable as a #nas in some relevant way?
can it attach a sata drive?
it can attach a sata drive to usb3
it can attach a ssd or sata to pci 2 (500mb/s)
it has gigabit netwerk
Time to fix the #NAS during my coming vacation.
Currently there is only one #HDD mounted... which is not great at all.
Let's fix that:
Two new drives ordered to do a #ZFS mirror. 😉

I’m giving @restic and Wasabi a try to backup some folders on our shared MacBook Pro at 🏠. I’m already using FreeBSD ZFS server for local backups. Restic should now ensure we have the important data stored outside the house.
All my servers are VMs running via Proxmox across 4 physical machines. There is a nightly backup of all servers on NAS-1. There is a weekly backup of all servers on NAS-2. There is a yearly backup of all virtual servers to a Blu-Ray that gets placed in a safety deposit box across town. NAS servers run 4-disk RAID-5. All physical drives run daily SMART tests and send results to Home Assistant and I get instant alerts if one fails.
Just finished setting up my new Synology NAS. Just a small DS224+ (my storage needs are basic).
This is actually my first #nas ever. I am impressed with how silent it runs. And DSM is really simple to use.
The only problematic thing I found so far is the length of the LAN cables. Was only just long enough, maybe 3-4 cm slack. Was thinking for a moment during setup I would have to start moving furniture.
