Neue -Platten brauch ich zur Hand. Was nimmt man denn heutzutage? oder ?
Irgendwelche Empfehlungen?

New blog post!

This time a short one, I'm presenting my small weekend project, a NAS running ZFS on a Raspberry Pi Zero. The idea was to have a RAID1 mirror using two USB drives, but that did not turn out so well. But hey, it's the journey that matters. And it's running ZFS so it's serious stuff.

I think I want to replace my TrueNAS setup with something based. None of the iocage configs work any more, and its getting harder to find software that supports freebsd outright.

Anybody have any suggestions for web frontends? I’d be putting it on a four year old core i5. It needs to do easy raid management (zfs is a plus) and docker virtualization (so I can spin up containerized services).

I was thinking maybe a Portainer setup.

Just looked at how much data I have stored on the nas... Under 500GB.
This makes me think just slapping 2 x 2TB SSD's in there (Which I have left from former projects) and call it a day.
Me filling those up will take probably forever.
As a little bonus: It will be faster, quieter and there will be less heat produced.
Sounds like a plan to me 😎

(Not into hoarding much data at all, especially media which can be replaced easily. Pictures and documents have far more importance)

I'm just now backing up and running the updates in preparation for moving its host 4B power source.

It feels like one of those sliding puzzle things where I'm doing this so I can then move an old laptop now running w/ , so I can then re-install my older RPi 1B which now boots from an old harddrive, so I can re-install , so I can get my msgs propagating again, so I can see toots of door open/close events.

New (used) on the way to replace my aged system. 🙂

A PC with a Intel i5-8400 (2.8GHz ) (6 Core) 8GB. (Will later have 16GB of RAM since I have a spare 8GB stick here) 😎

This will open up some new doors - the current one is a 2 core very low end CPU which struggles hard currently.

New fun incoming soon 😎

(Btw: Got it really cheap, so it was time to upgrade 👍 )

I have an old MacBook and I want to use it to run some self-hosted services. So far, I’ve only run self-hosted services on remote servers.

What’s the best way to connect it to 2 external SSDs?

I don’t want to trip over it and disconnect things if I use a dongle. Should I just build a NAS with multiple bay storage?

As for OS: I’m thinking Ubuntu, Cloudron, or Unraid

Dear , what is a good solution for people "not so much into tech" but want their data mirrored and safe, accessible via (W)LAN. They are not too poor, but of course, it should not be a high-end solution. Mostly photos and family videos. Any recommendations?

Is there anyone who uses a hardware component to files from a or in your network (using protocols like or ) to your amplifier? If so, what are you using and what are you experiences? I would like to have a chat about this matter and it would be nice to make an overview of different solutions with exact features (and bugs!) because this information is almost impossible to find.

How to turn an old PC into a NAS

A dedicated NAS may be highly functional but they are often pretty pricey… You often also don’t get a decent resale value on your recently replaced, but perfectly functional, PC.

There are a few reasons that you may want to use an older PC, but the biggest ...continues

One thing I learned way back in the days...

The first time you set up a dedicated you can never get back to just having only external drives....

Part of my move to bring my source control in house using (now on a shiny new ) I've just seamlessly upgraded from 16.5.1 to 16.5.4 - but I'm confused why they offer three different versions;

"Today we are releasing versions 16.6.2, 16.5.4, 16.4.4 for GitLab Community Edition"

Now, I understand the versioning but why are they maintaining numerous minor releases, i.e. 16.x?

Can I move from 16.5.x to 16.6.x and what will I get if I do? It's a bit unclear to me!
