wanted with 4 3,5" HDD's.

Whats your recommendation?

so the mainboard on my backup server died - and given the CPU is an intel i7-4771 on it you can imagen the age.

I want to replace it by a nas that ideally can run linux of my choice.

The main application is to be a backup server.

The secondary use is to be a file server in the apartment.

The third usage is application server so to run things like Grafana or some smaller web applications and home automatisation.

Low power consumption is wanted but not needed to have the lowest possible.

I'd like to have linux on the nas that is configurable via a command line. I am not sure if a NAS specific OS is helpful - or is it?

I'm just now backing up and running the updates in preparation for moving its host 4B power source.

It feels like one of those sliding puzzle things where I'm doing this so I can then move an old laptop now running w/ , so I can then re-install my older RPi 1B which now boots from an old harddrive, so I can re-install , so I can get my msgs propagating again, so I can see toots of door open/close events.

Liebe Schwarmintelligenz.

Over the last few weeks while building my new TrueNAS server I learned a lot about ZFS and how to optimize my new NAS for performance!

Bought a 2-bay Synology D223 NAS, and it arrived last night! Drive installation was a breeze, and getting it set up was as easy as plugging it into my Deco mesh router. I'm in love! ❤️🤓

I have new hardware and am about to setup my main home server from scratch.

If you have opinions on OS, software, configuration etc., I'd love to hear them!

Particularly, I'm curious about solutions for managing photos and home automation.

Neue -Platten brauch ich zur Hand. Was nimmt man denn heutzutage? oder ?
Irgendwelche Empfehlungen?

"Go big or go home" someone said to me once. I see your witty quote and raise you going big AT home.

Building a new NAS. Kicking it off with 3x 20TB drives. Probably going to pull over a couple of 12 TBs from the old NAS once I move files. Should bring things up to just over 60TB. 2x NVME slots for OS and Caching. Haven't quite worked out what I'm putting in those yet.

Unraid has been mostly good but I think I'm going TrueNAS Scale this time.

Now to get gud at ZFS

How to turn an old PC into a NAS

A dedicated NAS may be highly functional but they are often pretty pricey… You often also don’t get a decent resale value on your recently replaced, but perfectly functional, PC.

There are a few reasons that you may want to use an older PC, but the biggest ...continues

Nerve-racking ~24 hours. Setting up new storage array and because I don't have enough disks for completely safe execution, I'm taking one from the old array and putting it in new one. So old is not fully protected and new is building.

No, no they are not.

I have ~800 /Blu-ray discs with digital backups on a . And I use (admittedly, mostly conference sessions.) I watch which are not hosted on economy sites. I listen to ad-free streaming constantly.

What I DO NOT watch is CBC's streaming content, which were larded with , heavy surveillance.
