Liquor lockers are popping up in bars and members’ clubs around the world. It works something like this: You purchase an annual membership, then you can buy your favorite bottle of, say, whisky and store it at the bar until your next visit. “It’s a bit of a status thing,” says one venue manager. Gradually, the restaurants fill up and conviviality begins. All of this has been happening for hundreds and hundreds of years, in the same places, in the same establishments, at the same hour.
In the photo: the wine bar "al Brindisi" in Ferrara, originally "Hostaria del Chiuchiolino," which is the oldest wine bar in the world. The first written documentation dates back to 1435, a year in which the tavern was already famous.
