I followed Diane Deans pretty closely from 2019-2023 and say what you will about her but she gave no fucks about Jim Watson. And today not a single councillor who blindly followed Jim’s shadow had a damn thing to say about her. Just deep seated, pathetic cynicism

Gee, a union leader gets arrested within minutes for "blocking a road", while the Police let fascists shut down the entire downtown core for weeks.

Who, when and how? Councillors want answers on developer donations to wards | CBC News https://ap236.com/Ue6aFc @ontariogreens @onpoli

johnefrancis,
@johnefrancis@mastodon.social avatar

@ap236 @ontariogreens @onpoli councillor Lo had a decent writeup on this in his newsletter...it seems this was very much a legal thing ON cities were required to allow. Then it wasn't for a while. The province has a law requiring cities to start offering developer ward contributions by Oct.

Some councillors are upset because it means that their local developer patrons will have to compete against the wider world of well-funded developers who have lots of $$$ for ward benefits.

johnefrancis,
@johnefrancis@mastodon.social avatar

@grivettcarnac @dairpo @casseagull it's a bit complicated, with 4 different motions to delay or amend so that the contributions go into the city's general pile, not into the ward where the development is occurring.

east councillor Lo seems to be on the wrong side of most of it.

Being on the wrong side much of the time will make it hard to vote for him in the next election, and impossible to support as a volunteer or donor.

There is NOTHING in this video I disagree with. I urge the current PM and Premiers of Quebec & Ontario to do this fast and win amazing new support in Ottawa and Montreal.

@paige absolutely nails not only a solid plan but tells the story in an accessible & convincing way. I’ll be sending this to MPs & MPPs tonight.

Imagine the CPC did this? They’d suddenly turn rock-solid-red Montreal & Ottawa seats purple!

Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed on May 11 2022 while reporting on a raid of the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank by the Israel Defense Forces.

To honour the murdered journalist, School of Journalism launched a new award.

CTV's local news broadcast started with a story about how our taxes are being hiked, as well as things like transit fares, public facility fees, public parking.

Then they got into a positive story about groundbreaking on the new south-end police station.

Also, municipal taxes are based on property assessment values. The fact that they have to increase the taxes tells me our city is too far-flung. Developers are having a field day and we're footing the infrastructure bill.

Just close the NCC freeways. Seize Wellington and tell the mayor and his OSEG masters to take a hike.

Nice little puff piece on ramming the mayor’s budget through staff and council with a new face. Fleece the core, subsidize sprawl. Cops and water up at double inflation. Everything else gets real cuts. Hope you like more austerity and OSEG bailouts

Auxonic,
@Auxonic@mastodon.social avatar

This part where the author and city manager treat OSEG’s new subsidy as a done deal where we pay half a billion dollars and in return get $3.9M for affordable housing is absolutely galling.
