I played Super Mario RPG for the first time in January and what a wonderful, weird game. Fascinating to see Nintendo and Square’s styles mixing together. Funny and touching and gorgeous, I highly recommend it (it’s also light on the RPG stuff if you’re not a big fan).
I am enjoying #SuperMarioRPG on Switch! I tried playing the SNES original a few times, but always bounced off it.
I also appreciate the 'Breezy' setting, which makes combat encounters easier. That's always been my main bugbear of the Mario RPGs.
Happy New Year! Here is my top 10 #videogames of #2023. There are a few games I wish I was able to play before years end like #AlanWake 2, #Viewfinder, and #BaldursGate 3. Perhaps they will be on next years. What's your top 10? What are you looking forward to this year?
New Business has James playing Kangaroo, Jon playing Ghost Trick (finally!) and Super Mario RPG, Gui playing
Castlevania Advance Collection and Suika Game, and Greg revisiting Jet Force Gemini.
Our brief Listener Mail: What game had the worst update that changed or removed something?
Completed Super Mario RPG over the weekend, and it was fine. It's not a bad game it just didn't click with me like I thought it would.
I'm a big fan of the Mario & Luigi series, and Paper Mario too so I thought this would be a slam dunk. However, I'm guessing it's because I've never played this one before but have the others which added and improved on the formula that made me not gel with Mario RPG as much. Oh well, on to the next. #NintendoSwitch#ShareYourGames#SuperMarioRPG#Nintendo

The graphics...they're higher quality but I don't think the chibi style works as well in the modern style as it did back then. We'll see if it grows on me.
Geno, Bowser, and emeies look fine, but peach and mayro look weird
I guess the enemies looking good is mostly what matters. There's a reason they're so much larger than the party in 2D Final Fantasies.
Lost track of this thread but now I just finished Barrel Volcano, most optional stuff aside from postgame, Culex, and the dumb egg items that take a million years to get
It's an...interesting space for a game to be. It's so faithful to the original I'd almost agree with the "doesn't have a reason to exist" argument I usually don't like.
It really is the same game with fairly minor QOL and a coat of paint that IMO isn't necessary.
I'm a few hours into #SuperMarioRPG now and really enjoying it overall. Music is excellent & the battles are fun.
I'm surprised at the lack of voice acting in this remake. I don't think I'd want the cutscenes with voices, just some character grunts/sounds during gameplay. As it is it feels odd with Mario etc. being so quiet.
Makes sense if it was this way on the SNES (which I never played properly) but would expect it to be different here.
On a different note, I’m really enjoying the #NintendoSwitch remake of #SuperMarioRPG at the moment. Beat the main story a few days ago, and am currently going for 100% completion.
Interestingly, I never played the SNES version before this, so it’s remarkable how easily I got into the game and how well it holds up even today from a game design standpoint.
I didn't get to play much of the original Super Mario RPG and don't want to spend the bananas prices for an original cartridge to play on my original Super Nintendo or Super Nt (though I have the Japanese version but can't read/understand it).
Was thrilled when Nintendo announced a remake for the Switch and I just got the physical version so I can start playing it. Good to see the option to have either the original music or the newer version.
