This is a heckuva journey through the history of #TheGameAwards (back then #VGA). Mild warning: it started in 2003 on the Spike TV network, where it was basically an excuse to heavily sexualize women, shit on the industry and gaming stereotypes, and occasionally talk about games.
The modern Game Awards have their problems. But wow has Geoff Keighley dragged them out of the gutter.
Woah! One user took the time to create a playlist of all games that were presented at #TheGameAwards!
Really awesome to see the dedication some of you have. 💚
I initially wanted to do the same but I have to fight covid and still raise a kid. My time and energy is a bit limited right now so I really love to see this from you.
Some games still have missing data, this will change soon. Just like the playlist to have it available in you account any time you need it. 😊
But the structure of the show didn't do justice to the spirit of an awards ceremony. It rushed through the winners as an afterthought, while dedicating a ridiculous amount of time to ads, marketing, and endless name-dropping.
This detracted from properly acknowledging & celebrating the incredible work in the gaming world this year. #TheGameAwards#Gaming
I still LOVE and am impressed by #TheGameAwards Orchestra for the medley they make of music from each game nominated for the #GOTY award. My fav has to be that fade into #TheLegendOfZelda#TOTK's theme 😩 What a beautiful song fitting for my beautiful short king, Link.
I already hated media award shows, but now I have a new reason I didn't last year: the weaponization of fans against art.
The idea of there being a "best indie game" is already ridiculous. There are literally thousands released every year each telling a unique story in a unique way such that they're all completely incomparable.
And then when one "wins," everyone who hasn't played it gets insanely defensive over the fact that their favorite "didn't win."
It reflects poorly on the communities of games, it reflects poorly on the industry, and it reflects poorly on our collective media literacy to think it's reasonable to compare different works of vastly different scale and substance.
I've seen more Pizza Tower fans complain that "I haven't even heard of Cocoon, so it must be bad!" than anyone saying "wow, I've never even heard of that; I should check it out since so many people think it's good!"
Absolutely nonsensical if you ask me. Just because other people think something is good doesn't mean everything else is bad.
In reality, a good version of "#thegameawards" would be a celebration of all games rather than suggesting they're competing. "Here are 57 of the best indie platformers! A lot of people say RTS is a dying genre, but these devs made 20 awesome games you should check out! This was the best year ever for AAA experiences, here are our favorites!"
After watching the #TheGameAwards trailers I'm thinking about a watchlist feature. I don't know yet if I want to play the games but it's currently the best way to keep track of them.
Thinking about something like a separate entity from play status and playlists that can show notifications (these need to be implemented yet) if a game is released or updated. 🤔
What do you think? And what features would you like to see in this function?
Oh Moment nein.
Looks to be a #horror game and I HOPE THAT IT IS so we can finally get closure from Kojima's never-got-released, legendary of a game (playable trailer), #SilentHills P.T. 😭
Was really disappointed that the one-two haymaker combo of the Accessibility award and the Harmonium trailer was relegated to the "pre-show" of #TheGameAwards rather than some of the tripe like Best Thing That Doesn't Exist Yet (aka "Most Anticipated Game").
Welp. Sat in the Steam Deck giveaway queue for the #TheGameAwards giveaway only for the giveaway to end before I got a chance to enter. At least I got the Legion entry in? Feelsbadman.
Spider-Man 2 winning none of the awards is the funniest shit🤣I didn’t understand why it was even there in the first place so I’m glad it did so poorly😅Rare gamer W🥳#gaming#videogames#thegameawards
#TheGameAwards this year was a great awards presentation if you like a brutally long, exhausting show where they barely give out any awards on stage and when they do, the winners hardly get to talk or be celebrated before being rushed off-screen so they can move onto the next commercial, sponsorship, trailer or promotional interview where nothing of substance is said.
