Just testing Moshidon as my new mobile client. Looks good so far, not too far off the official app but with some added features and a slick Material You interface.

Looks like @pluralistic isn't the only one using #ProductivityPorn as an established term. Here's Cal Newport in 2020:

“[…] the productivity pr0n movement continued to thrive because the overload culture that had inspired it continued to worsen. G.T.D. was joined by numerous other attempts to tame excessive work obligations […]”

I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like that are using open formats like for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.

I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.

Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.

Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇

gisiger,
@gisiger@nerdculture.de avatar

@publicvoit I don't think, that Markdown per se is a lock-in factor. Ideally, every tool would save everything as flat text files. That would truly be open, imho.

Ages ago, I was using a simple, text file based local wiki. Things got complicated ever since.

Btw, are you familiar with ?

gisiger,
@gisiger@nerdculture.de avatar

@publicvoit I see, yes Obsidian is guilty here. I think. I'm a Joplin user myself.

Yes, OBTF is exactly that, evberything in one single text file: https://www.williamhern.com/living-in-a-single-text-file.html

And this guy, but he's about to do lists. I myself use todo.txt in a single text file for that:
https://jeffhuang.com/productivity_text_file/

I came across OBTF lately by reading this one:

@drizzy @publicvoit I am now almost 50 and for more than 25 years I am on the never ending quest of finding the right tools. The only future proof format is pen and paper. I lost a lot of data over the years, but I still have most of my notebooks from the past decades. I know, this is not the focus of this thread, but the longer I am in this game, the more I go back to pen and paper.

Hey #FountainPen people, I own these two vintage #Parker Sonnets. They are both excellent pens, but the cap on the blue one sits a bit loose. It doesn't fall off by itself, it stays on. But it's one of those things that can drive me crazy. What can be done? Any suggestions?

gisiger, to random
@gisiger@nerdculture.de avatar

Today, another vintage #FountainPen found its way into my collection. A friend gave me this #Élysée Caprice Delphin (green-grey metallic lacquer with a 14K gold-plated nib) he has no use for any more. The plating is not in the best shape, but overall the pen is in good condition. It has been used a lot, but well cared for. I was able to identify it through this excellent website:

https://ndma.com/resource/ndm26743.htm?elysee

According to this, it was made between 1984 and 1991.

Let me introduce you to my latest vintage #FountainPen I found last Saturday at a flea market: It's a Christian Dior with a sterling silver barrel and cap and a 14k gold nib. According to this forum thread, the pen was made by Caran d'Ache and the nib is by Montblanc. I'm thrilled, because I bought it at the stand without checking online, I just noticed the silver and gold hallmarks and went for it. It needs some TLC and has some dings, but the price was a steal.

Today was day 15 of my in writing . First conclusion: (1) It's great to be able to use a different every day, (2) the magical epiphany hasn't happened, but I'm now starting my daily planning in a more structured way, and (3) I can use my fountain pens even more often 😅

@ramblingreaders The problem with that error is worse than I thought. Now I can't even manually add a book any more. I get the same generic error each time I try. Any news about it?

gisiger,
@gisiger@nerdculture.de avatar

@ramblingreaders No problem, stuff happens. I tried to add the German version of Allen's GTD several times. The error also occurred, after I was able to import it and tried to edit the book.

I have yet to try to import, edit, or add other books. Might do that soon.

@ramblingreaders I tried to import a book from OpenLibrary and two other Bookwyrm instances and I always got this generic error message:
Server Error. Something went wrong! Sorry about that. Any idea why?

gisiger,
@gisiger@nerdculture.de avatar

@ramblingreaders Yes, I encountered this for the first time today. Just tried several other books, they all worked. It's just all the books from this search that I can't import: https://ramblingreaders.org/search?q=Allen+Wie+ich+die+Dinge+geregelt+kriege (it's the German edition of Allen's GTD). Weird.

No April fool's joke: Today, I started a #30DayChallenge of writing #MorningPages every day for, well, 30 days. Mainly as an excuse for using my #FountainPens even more often 😅 No, seriously, ever since I read about this form of journaling, I wanted to try it, so I finally did. It took me about 12 minutes to fill the 3 A4 pages. I will report more about it in the future, as I was and am still quite sceptical about the whole thing.

Hey people, as it seems fashionable here to humblebrag by posting screenshots of graphs: What exactly are the benefits of a graph view? Aren't bi-directional links just simpler and thus more effective?

We at @Vivaldi continue to be the only browser company all in on Mastodon and the Fediverse.

We have made our own instance, Vivaldi Social. Any user that has a Vivaldi account for sync or other services, can easily enable a presence on Vivaldi Social.

We have integrated Mastodon as a Web panel into Vivaldi.

We include links to Vivaldi Social into Vivaldi.

We also work on integrating our blogs and forums into the Fediverse.

We hope others will follow. Mozilla has talked a lot and we hope they will join us fully soon.

gisiger,
@gisiger@nerdculture.de avatar

@jon @Vivaldi Great news, especially about the blogs. I already use Vivaldi as my goto browser. I will consider switching to vivaldi.social if you bring your blogs to the fediverse. A federated Ghost alternative with newsletters would be great. Write.as offers newsletters with WriteFreely, but only on their paid service.
