the csd/ssd discourse is annoying. why can't we have both. ask the window manager to draw the window, then tell the client where it can place things like extra window buttons and tabs and things. kinda like windows but good. this would allow people who want to customise to be able to do so, but if you just install a desktop environment like gnome it still solves the problem.

Today I first tried Hyprland ... A very interesting window manager which feels a little bit crazy but works very well and can be enough customized

Using it together with mako (notifications), wofi (app launcher) and waybar (bar).

Any recommendations from anyone regarding tools that work great with Wayland?

This is a pretty cool concept for a tiling and compositor

Now if only I had the patience to learn any of them

Is there a point/benefit to using a without a on ?

I'm looking into WMs for the first time (considering ditching DEs altogether), but I don't like the idea of a one...

What are my options?

I am once again considering to write my own window manager

...unless the setup I am thinking of is already possible, let me construct this in your head:

On the top of the screen, there is narrow status bar, which is split into two parts. On the right side of the bar, you have your clock, your battery, your signal strength and so on.

On the left side, there is a clickable tab for every window you have opened. It's like browser tabs: Every window always uses the entire space below the status bar.

On the far left, there could be an icon which opens a searchable list of applications, kind of like #dmenu but vertical. Everything supports mouse input as you would expect.

Does that exist? Should I make it? It would be awesome for smaller screens, like phones.

Edit: I should add that I'm planning to run it on a Nokia N900 with a single 600 MHz CPU core, 256 MB RAM and a resolution of 800×480 pixels. Existing full desktop environments like Xfce4, LXDE, and so on are way to heavy to run.

Wer bei der Hitze eine Abkühlung braucht, sollte einen Blick auf IceFun, dem neuen SpaceFun Spin mit dem IceWM Windowmanager werfen.

any tiling wayland WM recommendations?
as minimal & lightweight as possible. all i really need "extra" is workspaces.
not sure whether there are any good ones, or if i should just use X (i did like the look of spectrwm)

If you are using a tiling window manager but want other people using your computer to automatically log in to a floating window manager, here is a little hack with .
