upgrade not going well... Not sure if the issue is or itself, but I lost my custom keyboard shortcuts, Flameshot doesn't seem to work anymore, software-properties-qt doesn't accept my root password...

Maybe time to try edition.

Night Light is now disabled (was enabled before), the screen edge action I had previously disabled has been re-enabled...

Nope. Bye . Maybe I'll be back later when the kinks are worked out...

It used to be the case that I searched for and used (as in beer) over paid ones. 'Cause I was poor and/or didn't want to pay.

Now I search for and use (as in beer and speech) over paid/proprietary software. 'Cause I value those principles more.

But it seems in future I'll need to start searching for and using AI-free FOSS over FOSS that uses . 'Cause apparently even FOSS projects are selling out to AI now... 🙁

When we heard there was a train we had to hop on board!

Today's theme is and to share a song whose lyrics mean a lot to you. Not easy to narrow down, but we'll try!

Vienna Teng's "Level Up" is a great anthem about embracing humanity and helping each other in the face of what's often an overwhelming world.

So, what's your anthem, the song you feel down to your bones? We'd love to know and sing along!

I find it annoying when a repo mentions that it's a of another project, but doesn't actually say what it itself is/does...

I shouldn't have to go to the original repo in order to find out what a fork does.

Also, forks should really mention why they exist. E.g. why should I use this fork over the original?

BWPanda,
@BWPanda@fosstodon.org avatar

@kreynen Ah, no sorry. I was referring specifically to projects that fork from another with the intent to take development in a different direction, continue to maintain a project after it becomes un-maintained by the original dev(s), etc. Basically projects with their own releases.

That is IT. FUCK GOOGLE. If you’re not going to provide technical support with a real live person then fuck you I’m going somewhere else. I’ve had this account for over a decade and now I can’t get into it on my new phone because YOUR STUFF IS BROKEN. And there’s no way to contact a real person in real time for help with any of the products!!

I’m so mad and I’m so frustrated with this whole phone upgrade. So fuck Apple too.

BWPanda,
@BWPanda@fosstodon.org avatar

@KestrelSWard I've not used either, but @privacyguides recommends @protonmail. So I'd personally go with them.

They don't list @mailfence as a recommendation, apparently because MailFence doesn't support '#encryption at rest': https://github.com/privacytools/privacytools.io/issues/1908#issuecomment-627154266

Which looks to still be the case in 2024: https://restoreprivacy.com/email/reviews/mailfence/

Any suggestions for a website/app that I can use to rate and I've seen, then get for new ones based on that?

I'm probably not going to find something , but ideally it'd at least be respecting...

I love using these hacks to customise my browser: https://github.com/MrOtherGuy/firefox-csshacks

Particularly the "autohide_bookmarks_toolbar.css" one. Not only is it good for , but also has the added benefit of not showing your personal bookmarks to anyone looking over your shoulder, or in screenshots that need to show the URL.

I've been lately thinking about ditching for a more friendly alternative. I even considered going back to buying CDs and ripping them onto my computer at one point.

Then I discovered , and I'm finding it pretty good. I like that I don't need an account. The only downside is there's no desktop option...

So looking for recommendations for a way to play/stream music that's , not self-hosted, and can be used on and desktop.

What is it with people posting the exact same thing over and over again?

I follow the hashtag, and there seem to be multiple people/accounts spamming it with the same post. Sometimes repeated weekly, sometimes daily...

Is this considered normal and I should stop whinging and just block them?

@stpaultim Try some of these: https://alternativeto.net/category/productivity/time-tracking-tool/?license=opensource

I used to use Project Hamster back in the day. I'm sure there's better things available now though.

Is it possible to setup contextual in such that, say, Ctrl-Shift-T will open a new instance of my terminal while I'm in a terminal, but won't do anything (or will do something entirely different) when I'm in another app?

BWPanda,
@BWPanda@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu Thanks! I was asking a generic question (as I think contextual keybindings in general would be cool), but yes, the purpose of my question was to use Ctrl-Shift-T to open a new instance of Alacritty (since it doesn't support tabs). And it has keybindings though, and that worked!

Anyone know how to sort after regular files in 's "Save As" dialog window?

My file manager already does this, so it seems Firefox has its own sorting... Couldn't see anything obvious in about:config either.

Just tried for and I found it slower than molasses. Tried creating my account and uploading my subscriptions. Worked for about 10 minutes and then wouldn't load anything.

Am I doing something wrong or am I getting a front-row seat for the deadly dance between YouTube and other front-ends?

@seanbala @kavin I had trouble with too. The page showing the video would load, but I couldn't play the video itself.

@Tutanota Put aside the whole issue of for a moment...

The site can either explain what they're doing in an easy-to-understand way, or not. I think the fact that they made a kid-friendly video about it is great. Now that many more kids/parents have an awareness of this (whether or not they agree with it) than otherwise would have. More awareness of privacy-related issues can only be a good thing IMO.
