I thought I was taking a photo of a Red-winged Blackbird. Or a European Starling because there were babies in a nest box just to the left of this tree. But no, it was neither! This was totally unexpected and my first time seeing a Bobolink.
I made a trip to Overpeck County Park in Leonia, NJ today just so I could see Purple Martins. They have a nice condo setup but it seems to be lacking bedding so the birds were busy shopping this morning. Looks like the condos will be lined with grass and leaves.
The Killdeer nest has failed. And someone stole 2 eggs. One of the Killdeer looked like e was making another nest in the middle of the field that will be filled with cars in two weeks. Hopefully the third attempt at a nest will succeed.
@BeazLouise oh nooo, that is very sad to hear. Bless you for caring and being an advocate and friend to them. I’m sure you will open some of those dog owners eyes to change their behavior. Sadly some people are hopeless 🥺
A dog flushed the Killdeer from its nest so I had an opportunity to count the eggs before it hopped back on the nest. This nest will likely fail because cars will be parked in the area where it is starting on Memorial Day weekend. I don't think the eggs will have hatched by then. But they might. We're at day 9 or 10 and Memorial Day weekend is in 14 days. Killdeer eggs hatch between day 22 and 29. 🤞
