Carrolade,

You sorely overestimate how easy it is to get a trained animal to walk in a perfectly straight line. They do not get magical perfect-line-walking powers just because they are animals.

Carrolade,

Israel’s survival is not threatened by anything short of large-scale pre-emptive Iranian nuclear barrage, or civil war.

Claiming your actions are necessary for survival is a very old trick, commonly used by authoritarian regimes as a convenient excuse.

Carrolade,

It’s much easier to say that an intentional blockade of food is leading to starvation, and that is a clear war crime. Very simple argument, easier to prove.

Talking about a bombing campaign is more difficult when soldiers are mixed in with the civilians. We may be able to point at the situation and say “that’s clearly fucked up”, but courts don’t work that way. They have to acknowledge that in a war, the army is allowed to destroy the combatants of the enemy. A certain amount of collateral damage in the form of innocent lives lost is allowed by international law. This makes it all much murkier and more difficult to prove what is or is not a genuine war crime. They can’t wing it, or guess, or go by what it “looks like”, they have to prove it, which again, is difficult.

Starvation and depriving food aid though, very easy to prove.

Carrolade,

A historical context helps out with this. They’re just us from 500 years ago. Even this divinely ordained stuff is straight out of history textbooks, the divine right to rule that medieval kings claimed.

Carrolade,

Never is a strong word.

Until 1995, when Israeli PM Rabin was assassinated by a right winger, they were moving towards a two state solution, to the point of the IDF forcibly removing their own Jewish settlements from the lands of the prospective Palestinian state.

After the assassination, Netanyahu became the next PM, and has served in the position for most of the time since, asides most of a decade in the 2000s where other Likud politicians held it. He reversed the policy of settler removal.

Try not to conflate the entire country with the crazy right winger leadership they have currently. The same leadership of strongmen that catastrophically failed to keep them safe back in October, which is the one single thing such a man says he is supposed to be good at.

All that said, I also support Palestinian entry as a UN member state, and am tired of the US unfairly favoring its treaty ally in this case.

Carrolade,

I wonder how often they think “Man, I could’ve just been a normal rich snobby person doing whatever I want, and instead I get this…”

Carrolade,

may be turned into a culture war battle

May be? Bit optimistic, don’t you think?

Carrolade,

tbf, salad can come in many forms, and is often served in a bowl. Wrap is a bit of a grey area, but a salad in a wrap is a thing.

Carrolade,

And how many brave Ukrainians are dead now, and died with no shells for their cannons, no missiles in the batteries we gave them, waiting for us to hold a damn vote?

I hope Johnson thinks about that when he kneels down to pray at night. I hope it haunts him for the rest of his life.

Carrolade,

Being so afraid of your government that you do not speak out, assemble, engage with a free press, practice your religion, etc etc etc is about as un-American as something can get.

Carrolade,

Best unpopular opinion post I’ve seen so far.

US ban on worker noncompete agreements faces lawsuit from major business group (www.reuters.com)

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the country’s largest business lobby, filed a lawsuit on Wednesday seeking to strike down a federal agency’s near-total ban on employers requiring workers to sign agreements not to join rivals or launch competing businesses....

Carrolade,

Competition is good? Huh, what a novel idea.

'Vortex Cannon vs Drone' - Mark Rober shows off tech from a "defense technology company that specializes in advanced autonomous systems". That seems bad

I’ve enjoyed Mark Rober’s videos for a while now. They are fun, touch on accessible topics, and have decent production value. But this recent video isn’t sitting right with me...

Carrolade,

I don’t know about everyone else, but I had a great interest in war when I was a boy. Now as an adult, I’d rather have Mark explaining things to kids than anyone else they might seek out.

Carrolade,

Been tried quite a bit now in the Russo-Ukrainian theater. Not as easy as it sounds.

Carrolade,

Have to admit, Extinction Rebellion is a pretty good name for an activist group.

Carrolade,

Why, evolutionarily speaking, should we have such experiences at all?

If your brain is able to find out it is in a situation where dying is highly likely, it would get the best chances of surviving the whatever-is-happening if it quickly expends all its last remaining resources reviewing its stored info and creative potential looking for any last-ditch solutions.

An offshoot of fight-or-flight, basically, or the neurological equivalent of mom-lifts-car-off-baby.

Even if brains fail to come up with any sort of solution 99% of the time, it’d still confer an advantage over just … doing nothing and giving up.

If this idea is accurate, it’d be closely related to the sensation of time slowing down during extremely dangerous, demanding, physical situations.

Carrolade,

Yes, not being able to legally send them abroad is probably one of the reasons they “officially annexed” the contested regions into the Russian Federation. Thus making them no longer “abroad”.

Carrolade,

Yeah. I wouldn’t want to take part in their coming plans either.

Carrolade,

though tensions between the two allies have grown sour amid mounting U.S. concerns

Should be …relations between the two allies have grown sour amid…, or …tensions between the two allies have grown amid….

“tensions” growing sour makes no sense though. Are there sweet international tensions?

Can really see the deteriorating quality of journalism in the writing used. They’re being paid for this. Supposedly anyway.

Carrolade,

President Zelensky does regular addresses to his people, just short speeches. FDR did a similar thing, with his fireside chats. I don’t see why Biden couldn’t do similar.

Stop relying on third parties to get your message out. Take matters into your own hands, personally talk to the American people every day, on every platform that will broadcast you. Literally, all of them. Just talk to them, they need it.

Ukraine denies US requested to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries (newsukraine.rbc.ua)

Ukraine did not receive calls from the United States to cease attacks on Russian oil refineries, according to the advisor to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podolyak. Earlier, the media reported on Washington’s alleged request to Kyiv....

Carrolade,

Yeah, that kinda reeked of misinformation to me. The US is largely energy independent these days, we’re a net exporter, not an importer.

Carrolade,

An enclosed space can also get hotter than the “burning temperature” of whatever fuel you are using to heat it up. Because heat keeps accumulating if it has nowhere to escape to.

During a presentation by an executive with Google’s Israel branch on Monday, a Google Cloud engineer stood up and shouted, “I refuse to build technology that powers genocide or surveillance.” They were later fired.

Carrolade,

Sure did take him a long time to get upset about surveillance.

Carrolade,

Small, weak people need an excuse for why they feel so small. One that deflects the blame from where it truly belongs–on them, for lacking the strength and courage to be better than they are. For lacking the spine to take a more difficult, more noble road.

So just believe it’s not your fault, it’s some mighty shadowy conspiracy thing of great darkness. Not just you being a coward and weakling. Much more preferable.
