Russian President Vladimir Putin's appointment of a new defense minister, Andrey Belousov, is seen as an attempt to streamline Russia's economy and mobilize it for the war effort.

Russia's military has faced numerous supply and logistics problems that thwarted its all-out war against Ukraine from the get-go. Two years later, the problems of poor logistics and lack of strategic planning persist.

Wasn’t that the message from Blinkon yesterday or the day before? The weapons are going to support the war effort, and it’s up to the combatants how they’re best used.

Plausible deniability. A bit like Putin with his nukes, putting them on the table, results in action in kind. No one can predict what happens in war, but not responding to threats is what gave us Mussolini and then Chamberlain with his “peace in our time”. Both statements are out there, let Utin suck on that for a bit

A lot of people feared that the content or behavior of Threads would be a huge threat to the fediverse. I never believed that. It was the sheer size of their clout and reach that would come to dominate by sucking all the oxygen from the room. Even the hardest core fedi evangelists are now posting mostly on Threads first, believing it increases their reach. I don’t know if anything can offset that sea change fast enough to matter.

I would not touch a Meta product, I’ve blocked it and am happy with this little oasis of a mass commercialism free zone on the Internet

Picking up after my "mistrial" thread/ 1/...

All via McB for awhile:

Counsel approaches, brief sidebar

"Binoculars down."

As I mentioned, courtroom rules strictly enforced. During sidebar, court security doesn't allow reporters to use binoculars they had brought to see exhibits and facial expressions better

In 1968, massive campus protests against the Vietnam war spread to the Democratic national convention in Chicago that year, which became a violent confrontation between protesters and police. The result was the election of Republican Richard Nixon, who enormously escalated the war, including the invasion and mass bombing of Cambodia.

@LLS
The response to the demonstrations was what lost Humphrey the election. Remember, too, that RFK won Californias delegates, (with the other peace candidate McCarthy second), the night he was assassinated. Nixon rode into the WH on a law and order platform enabled by live TV of police clashing with thousands of young people portrayed as violent protestors. The majority of Dems wanted to end that damn war, instead, we got the man who made it bigger.

@SallyStrange Not just officials, also the protestors. If Biden can maneuver Netanyahu into accepting a three way with the Saudis and get a Palestinian State agreement by the convention, he can pull this out. If not, I fear that Gaza will end up the largest cemetery on Earth

Really don’t understand this comment, sorry. I took part in those demonstrations in the late ‘60’s & early 70’s until I was drafted away from the Bay Area. The big one with 50,000 of us on Easter Sunday, iirc, was the most successful, it couldn’t be denied. The ones on campus where the police could circle us and beat heads in were more of a gift to Reagan, who railed against the lack of law and order while we were being brutalized by the police. It’s not both-siderism to want progressive values to succeed and prevent us from repeating mistakes.

The lesson is that protestors need to avoid playing into the hands of a press that wants to demonize them. Protest is necessary but violence will be played on media as coming from the students. Mahatma Gandhi and MLK jr knew how to take the violence without responding in kind, and they made progress. We in the anti-Viet Nam war didn’t and it backfired on us. I think it will take sacrifice and bloodshed to win, but violence even if it’s in self defense will lose. With distrust in msm and social media, I think this movement has a real chance, my generation blew it and over 58,000 of us died.

You really wanted to be wrong?
Don’t worry, you are.
I will reiterate one time my premise in hopes you can understand it and then leave this thread.
Returning violence for violence is the surest path to defeat for our progressive cause.
As for leaving this thread, I have learned an adage here on Mastodon recently, it goes like this
“The bees don’t waste their time explaining to the flys why honey is better than shit”

I already shared an article from the ACLU regarding the rights of protesters this week but here’s another one.

There are loads of First Amendment protections that apply to everyone and everyone should know them but there are also things that aren’t covered and it’s nowhere near “do whatever you want wherever you want, zero consequences.”

Know the difference.

Civil disobedience can result in jail time and fines, but non violent protesting should never be punished by police brutality. It is frequently, though. Be prepared for physical injuries. It’s not right, it’s not fair, but it is inevitable.

It’s happened to me, I was standing along side a Black student in ‘69 at an anti war protest at SF State when the tac squad charged us on horseback. We both ran across 19th Ave and he went left and I went right. The cop chased after him and I’m still alive today. I knew I was no different than him except I’m white.

  • try to make law enf officers immune from prosec

If this doesn’t scare the living shit out of you, you aren’t paying attention.

How do we get 2 evils here? Biden has changed the course of US history for the good, establishing initiatives fighting climate change (my #1 issue), rebooting manufacturing in America that support organized labor, and standing up for our allies abroad, including his pressure on Netanyahu to prevent a genocide in Gaza which is unappreciated by most of the fools who think he is in charge there. If tfg was POTUS, there would be ten times as many dead Palestinians
Lessor of 2 evils is a false premise
