gasp

when @radiofreelunch extremely generously offered to send me a "couple" old Newtons, i balked. i had an old MP2100 years ago, and it was tough to get software loaded on them, even with all the correct hardware

driving home an hour later, i thought: what the hell is wrong with me, i'm turning down a free newton?! 😅

a week later, this amazingly heavy bundle of Newtons and Newton peripherals arrived. thank you good sir :D

there is extensive battery leak/corrosion from the AA batteries on each of them, so they'll spend the next few months getting some TLC. hopefully most survive!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted an of a point on a circle generating a .

If you turn the curve "upside down", you get the . This curve provides the shortest travel time starting from one cusp to any other point on the curve for a ball rolling under uniform . It is always faster than the straight-line travel time.

@newtontalk A friend said people here might be interested in Newton devices. I think I will keep the 2000 (so I can theoretically run my software) but the others are available to anyone who wants to pay shipping from Tacoma, WA. (Preferably as a set.)

@vga256 Probably not your thing but I have a bunch of old Newton devices. I think I want to keep one to see my software but want a home for the others. (My very minimal search didn’t turn up anywhere that people were wanting them.)

So this MessagePad 130 showed up on PayPay Fleamarket for $45. Never seen a Newton go for this cheap in Japan (even with massive a black screen burn spot), and they're rare to show up to begin with.

The photos didn't show the screen, but revealed some bad battery leakage (which was also disclosed in the description), but I figured at least it could be used for parts (my pen on my 120 has lost it's end cap!)

It arrived today so let's see what we got!

Mica powder does seem to have fixed my MessagePad 2000's problem with sticky rubber coating. I went with black powder so it may be darker than the original.

WARNING: I'm brand new to Newtons so I can't guarantee mica powder will work on yours. If you try, please get advice from others too and test it first.

English polymath Isaac Newton, who was a mathematician, physicist, astronomer, alchemist, and theologian, died in 1727.

His pioneering book Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687) consolidated many previous results and established classical mechanics [1]. He also made seminal contributions to optics (among many other things), and shares credit with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz for developing calculus.

rather fortuitously this morning I found the English version of

https://www.academia.edu/116274735/KANT_PHILOSOPHER_OF_PHYSICS_I_Bicentennial_Reflections

then turned to the 'metaphysische Anfangsgründe ..."-text he is about there and gladly found this

Got a MessagePad 2000 and it works great!

Its finish is sticky, though, as seller reported. I tried what worked on my other stylus: IPA. Tested it on a corner and it got the goop off and doesn't seem to be damaging the underlying plastic.

Newton folks, think this is safe to do across the whole case?
