@EllieK@mstdn.ca

Plant eater, animal lover, reader, socially disassociated currently, photographer, e-bike (now) rider.
I've stopped boosting images that lack alt text. Even ones that I love!
I live in Nova Scotia, with my husband, border collie and three Cornish Rex cats. I seem to spend 90% of my waking time in the kitchen, cooking and the rest out walking my dog.
I do not post or comment on anything political.
I write stories and take pictures. They are on my blog mostly.

Does anyone know why my browser feed for notifications looks like this? I would like to see at least most of the post, not just a single line in the middle of my (big) screen. I don't want advanced (with lots of columns, just more info on the posts. Thanks!

Fingers of Light
Nova Scotia skies often delight and sometimes astonish me, like this one did. The valley landscape with the low, understated mountains in the distance are the perfect foil to this drama. Have a lovely week ahead, friends. You can view the post here:

Tempeh is an excellent source of protein and is really easy to produce in a home kitchen.
While most people think of soy tempeh, which I also make, my personal favourite is made with beluga lentils. This batch of lentils was sprouted before cooking to increase the bioavailability of the nutrients.
This tempeh has a great chewy texture and we love it air fried just as it is, no need to add any flavouring.

An uncut block of the fermented tempeh with a white mycelium covering it and a few of the lentils showing through.

Happy 42nd Anniversary to Us!

t's hard to believe that this young couple is us, 42 years ago today. There's been a lot of water under all kinds of bridges since then, but we have sailed, paddled, rowed, poled and occasionally motored along them together all the way. Yes, we've had to use buckets to bail at times, but we always managed to stay afloat because we had each other. Thanks for all these wonderful years, @stevenkennard

I wanted to share something happy today and this seems to fit the bill.
All dogs are special to their owners who love them, who have seen into their hearts. So when I look at your lovely dog in a photograph I only see a small part of this special animal. It's a bit like an iceberg. So much is hidden beneath the surface.
This is my dog, Joni. When I look at her I see the heart shining through in her eyes. I see a smile.
Happy Monday all.

Technical Cat Question

Edit: I have decided, as we have no guests, to store it in the guestroom cupboard, which has 2 doors!
Zaz has become obsessed with chewing my exercise mat, even rolled up. She finds wherever I hide it, no matter where I put it. If I can reach it, so can she, only more easily. I don't have a cupboard with a door (if I did she would work out how to open it or scratch the door to pieces to try to get in).
Help!

I cut all the flowers I could that were open enough, knowing that they might all be ruined by the storm. They are so cheering on the windowsill against the dull day and storm outside.

A new batch of started in the prefect weather conditions for it!
Partly inspired by @Leisureguy who is frequently posting his , and having finished my frozen supplies, I got started on this. I will do two of them then get @stevenkennard to smoke the finished batches. It's delicious on salads.
Years ago, I invested in an attachent for my mixer that cracks the soybeans, otherwise it would be too labour intensive.

EllieK, (edited ) to Bread

Okay, here's a challenge for the bakers on here:

I want to make a flat, crispy bread, with whole, cooked, possibly sprouted grains (wheat, rye, barley, buckwheat). I want as little flour as possible in the dough, just enough to hold it together. I have a strong rye sourdough.
The purpose is to have a crisp bread that would work well for a diabetic. Hence the whole grains. Also oil free, of course.
Any thoughts,

@wfpb

Happy cat day
Rupert loved to be vacuumed. He would throw himself down in front of whatever was being vacuumed to make sure you didn't miss him. He'd roll around to make sure you got everywhere, even his tail, using the nozzle. Molly, though, had a running battle with the cleaner, hated it.
Aren't cats great?
Happy #Caturday everyone who celebrates.

Red Admiral on our butterfly bush today

I don't remember seeing one of these here before, so it was exciting for me to see it on the buddleia bush we planted last year. Such a cheering sight.

Sunset Geometry
Happy Thursday! Who liked geometry at school? Actually, I did. This is full of just the sort of lines and shapes that I grew to love in those classes. A sunset picked these elements out perfectly, at the same time putting a rosie glow on the school - a colour I don't imagine many kids asssociate with school.I hope this brings back some good memories of fun times.

Barred Owl
Today is a good day for a barred owl photo. When we had bird feeders in our front garden, we used to see hawks waiting in the branches to pounce on unsuspecting goldfinches and the like which I didn’t appreciate.Owls, though, come out later and so they watch for mice that are probably making nests in our car brakes and the like. They're welcome to them. I love this face. Here's looking at you! Happy Owl Day.

EllieK, (edited ) to statistics

Can anyone who understands statistics with regards to covid infection rates understand why the rating, which used to be from 1-10 in severity is now calculated at 1-20?

What does that mean when I see a rate 'high' - 5.3/20 in Nova Scotia? Would that have been 10.6/10 before? And therefore severe? Or 2.6/10 which would have only been elevated.
I'm no good at these things!

After the prequel intense rain and before the storm. Still hanging on.

We had torrential rain yesterday in the buildup to the tropical storm and this poor caterpillar is the only one I found this morning of the 3 I've been nurturing.I hope it survives the big storm brewing for the weekend. I hope the others are okay, just hunkering down.

Joni and the First Blue Ball
It’s a day for a puppy photograph. Thinking about it, though, most days are good days to see a puppy pic. This was Joni when she was about 10 weeks old, with her first blue ball. She was a terrible chewer, as you can see, and was on her way to destroying this, but was able to spare a few seconds to glance up at me. Have a lovely day, friends.

Time to reread a favourite book of mine,

'Being Mortal - Aging, Illness, Medicine, and What Matters in the End'

Happiness on a Stem
I’m pretty sure that everyone reading this post needs to see something cheerful and happy at this point.I know that I do.These bright-faced things were facing the setting sun, lighting up the edge of a garden across the road, so I crossed over to look more closely and almost at once I felt better, just looking at them. So here they are as a gift for you all, as beats Doom Scrolling.

Reflecting on the Fall

This was taken on our trip through Ontario one October. Steven was teaching his workshops in Ottawa so I got to explore the countryside. The weather was bright and the leaves reflected in the water had a rich golden tone. They almost looked like a mosaic. I feel warmer just looking at this and remembering how peaceful it all was.
Happy Tuesday all!

An Un-Anniversary Celebration
Memories – from 2014 – a fun throwback story if you want to read on… We are in Quebec city, having a great couple of days on our way home from a bit of a tour around friends and family in Ontario and Quebec. Last night we found a little restaurant, the Café de Paris, (read the tale here...

As the summer is winding down there are still some mornings that look like this. Joni was quite young in this photograph, but the intensity never wanes.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Maine
This nearly 200 year old lighthouse in Maine sits atop one of the most beautifully striated rock formations I have ever seen. The seams of different coloured layers running up from the shore to the building could have kept me there photographing all day. My friend Mac (whose wife, Carol took me on my sightseeing […] see the full post here:
