Plant eater, animal lover, reader, socially disassociated currently, photographer, e-bike (now) rider.
I've stopped boosting images that lack alt text. Even ones that I love!
I live in Nova Scotia, with my husband, border collie and three Cornish Rex cats. I seem to spend 90% of my waking time in the kitchen, cooking and the rest out walking my dog.
I do not post or comment on anything political.
I write stories and take pictures. They are on my blog mostly.

My friend tells me
that she is finished
with precautions
everything is collapsing
everyone has given up
nobody cares
so why should she?
angrily she asks
why I keep bothering
don’t I know she’s right?

And I don’t tell her
that I think she’s wrong
I just tell her: I still care.

EllieK,

@plaguepoems
And we still care.
I had to write this to a friend just now:
"I can't risk getting any of the illnesses that are so prevalent. We hear of so many colds, flu's and mystery illnesses. I'm not in a good state and can't take risks with potentially adding long covid. You can't understand, I know, but I hope you can respect our decision. ❤️ "

EllieK, to Dogs

So dogs can understand the meaning of nouns...
And this is a complete surprise to no one who has ever owned a border collie.

They knew it too, of course!
My kind of researchers who just want to play with dogs while pretending to be working!

If you saw that thing the other day about intermittent fasting being bad for you (intermittent fasting being eating your meals within an 8-hr window):

I've never been a big snacker, so have almost always done the breakfast, lunch, dinner thing, usually within an 8-10 hr window, depending on the fellow's schedule, so dinner to breakfast is "fasting," so that article raised an eyebrow. Like a lot of media-reported science it just gave a punchline with much substance.

EllieK,

@CStamp
The article did make a note of the possible limitations of the study.
For balance, I had 2 of Dr. Greger's videos linked in the comments (watch the videos or read the transcripts) :
https://nutritionfacts.org/video/time-restricted-eating-put-to-the-test/
And
https://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-benefits-of-early-time-restricted-eating/

EllieK,

@CStamp
I get it.
But if that is what is available for studies, it did appear to show some benefit. At least that's what I got from the videos.
"This may help explain why all participants voluntarily expressed their interest in continuing the time-restricted feeding on their own, even after the study ended. You don’t often see that after weight loss studies. Even more remarkably, eight months later, they retained their weight loss and improved energy and sleep. ...

EllieK,

@CStamp
2/2
"At the one-year point, maintained their boosted energy and sleep, and kept the weight off, all from one of the simplest of interventions: just telling people to stick to a consistent 10- to 12-hour feeding window of their own choosing..."

EllieK,

@CStamp
Apologies.
I was not arguing for the one that says time restricted feeding is bad for you. Maybe I expressed it badly.
I eat within a 9 or 10 hour window myself. It suits me as I can't eat too close to bedtime. There's only so much time in my day. Lol!
Have a good day, friend.

Good day to all you lovely people out there!
This morning Pax is enjoying peace and quiet in a sunny window. Hope you can find moments of peace and quiet today too.

EllieK,

@GertrudeZane
Doesn't she look peaceful?
Have a happy day, Pax, Jean and the whole gang!

We've had to go back to putting Joni's gentle leader on for walks as she has begun pulling so badly again (in our area, dogs must be on leashes, even in the woods) . She hates it too, but after a short bit, she doesn't seem to notice it any longer. She barks like a lunatic when we are getting ready. I have to put her outside to wait, or I would go deaf.
Enjoy your walk!

Pax fell asleep in her own little nook inside the bookcase/entertainment center. Guess it's time to say good night or good day to our Mastodon friends!

A quick photo post of the air dried sharp cashew 'cheese' (from Miyoko's recipe) after 4 days of drying. I will next wrap it in greaseproof paper and refrigerate for as long as we can stand to leave it. Or I could just salt the outside lightly again and leave for another few days to deepen in flavour. It's already so good! I think I'll leave it a couple more days, as we already have some of the turmeric black pepper one to eat.

Just came back from my quarterly rheumatologist appointment. The injections have worked 100%! Zero inflammation. I'm feeling better than I ever have, like I'm 30 again. Best gift ever.

What is he giving you for injections?

A nine year old boy named Matt in Singapore was infected with COVID in January 2024. Unfortunately he developed myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) from the COVID infection and then had a stroke which weakened his left side ( https://straitstimes.com/life/triple-whammy-nine-year-old-boy-in-singapore-suffers-covid-19-myocarditis-and-stroke ). 🧵 1/

Good morning all!
How strong are you feeling today?
Increasing Muscle Strength and Function in Older Adults with Cocoa Powder
As an older adult (I'm 74), I found this video really interesting and thought of the conversation with Sharon the other day about our shared concern for maintaining muscle strength.
This video (or you can read the transcript) is worth watching:

Escaping from marauding siblings isn't easy, but Pax knows just what to do. The higher she goes the better.

Good morning/afternoon/evening to each and everyone!

Happy day, everyone.

Beautiful.
Are those prickly pear? We have some like that.

EllieK, (edited )

I think I call them prickly because of the thorns!

Correction
Steven says ours are pickling pears. Small round green fruit. Long thorns.

"The intermittent fasting trend MAY pose risks to your heart

Intermittent fasting — when people only eat at certain times of day — has exploded in popularity in recent years. But now a surprising new study suggests that there MIGHT be reason to be cautious: It found that some intermittent fasters were more likely to die of heart disease.
Zhong said that he and his colleagues .. were surprised by their findings."

Very true.

EllieK,

@Sharonbw
With the limitations that they acknowledge, it does give pause for thought.
The loss of lean muscle mass was interesting. And worrying for us older folks.
We have never followed that. We eat in a roughly 12 hour window.

EllieK,

@Sharonbw
A couple of interesting videos (or read the transcripts)
https://nutritionfacts.org/video/time-restricted-eating-put-to-the-test/
And
https://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-benefits-of-early-time-restricted-eating/
I have a lot of time for Dr. Greger. He puts a lot of research into his material.
But of course, new studies are always coming out and could show different results.
