So, an update on things.

  1. I'm very sorry for all of the degraded performance lately on calckey.social. As you may or may not know, we've been testing changes with our codebase, database deployment, ims deployment, and a whole lot more. After a lot of testing and changes, I thought that we were good enough to start opening signups again. Turns out... we're not. As I continue to work on things and start team up with some very smart people who've worked in deployment and scaling systems, we're going to do our absolute best to make sure that we can handle things on all ends, and hopefully get extra hands on deck for day-to-day operations, so it's not all on my shoulders. I was sadly unable to attend to a lot of things yesterday due to being out of town for the holiday, and being in a no-service area for the majority of the day, so I didn't know that there were issues until it was too late. Thank you for your patience as we go through growing pains. A full write-up on what went wrong, the steps we took, and how it's fixed (once it's fixed!) will be made after all this is done. For real.

  2. I did NOT expect this amount of support, interest, and coverage! Hitting 13k from 11k in a little over 2 days across all servers is still boggling my mind. And it's not just calckey.social -- so many other servers are getting new users, and even ~30 new servers cropped up! Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. I'll make sure that I do my hardest to make sure you all have a great experience.

  3. As promised, you all deserve a peak into what we've been working on in secret for months. More details to come tonight/tomorrow. Stay tuned. 😉

Sincerely,
Kainoa

Evoterra,

@kainoa Thanks for the update. Not gonna lie—the downtime is starting to bug me. Not in a “I’m fucking out of here if it goes down one more time” way or anywhere near, but more of a “really? Again? [sigh]” sort of way.

So again, thanks for the update. I’m looking forward to reading the report and to a more stable future. Cheers!

Happy birthday, @kainoa! Suggested gift sent. Thanks for all you do to make a groovy flavor of the !

Look, I’m probably going to keep sharing quips like this about the in until it’s over or we’re all dead. Thought you should know.

I took a bit of time to clean up the running list of audio fiction creators with accounts on the to make it more inclusive of all Fediverse accounts, not just .

https://theend.fyi/info/fiction-podcast-accounts-on-mastodon

Peruse the list on that page and find some fun folks to follow. And if you want on that list, there's a simple form to fill out on the page.

No, I’ll not be signing up for Threads.

Yes, I’m ideologically opposed to all things Zuck.

No, I’m not worried about Threads fucking up the Fediverse. (Though some say I should be, and I’m glad those people exist.)

Yes, I’m sure the UX over there is, or will soon be, fantastic.

The reason I’m not signing up for Threads is simple: I blew up my Instagram accounts months ago and can’t be arsed to make a new one.

And I’m happy here. 🍻

This saddens me, but is not at all surprising.

We either need a fiction podcast event(s) that attracts more fans than creators—none of the former are at current podcast events and far too few of the latter—or fiction podcasters need to go to events where fans already gather.

Who wants to start one?

A cogent perspective on Apple Vision that has me rethinking my immediate dismissal.

In about 3 hours, Game 3 of the begins, where I hope to see a severe thrashing of the by the of .

We'll return to the same bar near our house that has the game, but this time, I think I'll attempt to listen to the game via while I watch it on a dozen TVs.

Sadly, the side of the is pretty sparse, so I'll be mainly talking to myself. I'm not sure that the @hockey group is still functioning, so it may be the @TheHockeyWriters and a handful of us fans posting around The Verse.

Evoterra, to random

Oh noes. Overtime. But at least the come back with the PP for 1:50. Perhaps that’s enough to put Game 3 of the to bed.

Well, shit. I guess I’ll have to be happy with news of indictments and televangelist rotting in hell to make my day.

See you Saturday for Game 4, .

Good morning, denizens of the !

As much as I love 3 day weekends, it does rather compress the amount of work that needs to be done in a week.

Still... I'll take it.

On my list is to format a new newsletter so I can send it out tomorrow to everyone subscribed to https://theend.fyi and get their feedback.

And, if that feedback is positive, figure out a way to start automating some of this stuff!

Curious about Lemmy and boy, we're not making this easy are we?

  1. Lemmy or kbin?
What is the difference? Do they still aggregate the same things? Just getting my head wrapped around the difference is confusing.

  2. Lemmy requires me to join a server?
Not this again... I DON'T care what the server's 'topic' is. I just want something that is reliable so I can see MANY topics.

Note: I really REALLY don't want you to help me (I know the answers)
I'm pointing out a problem

Evoterra,

@scottjenson Now that I've switched to , I've been dealing with a fair amount of downtime. Hey, groovy. New shit, it breaks. I get it.

But that means I've missed conversations about "Covenant 2.0". I found this via searching: https://github.com/bildpunkt/fediverse-friendly-moderation-covenant/blob/master/covenant.md

Is that the spot? Or is there another resource you can point me to? We're about to spin up a instance and open it up, and I'd love some guidelines to follow. (Though I do love whipping out the when warranted!)

SiriusXM is replicating Spotify’s move from [checks notes] 2018 and will be mixing podcasts in with whatever other content SiriusXM has in their app. Cool.

    Screenshot from https://stitcher.helpshift.com/hc/en/1-stitcher/faq/974-why-is-stitcher-being-discontinued-and-where-can-i-listen-to-podcasts-moving-forward/ reads:

Why is Stitcher being discontinued and where can I listen to podcasts moving forward?
    Last Updated: 1h
SiriusXM, the owner of Stitcher, is focused on incorporating podcasts into its flagship SiriusXM subscription business. Subscribers can listen to podcasts within the SiriusXM app and will see an all-new listening experience later this year.

All podcasts on Stitcher can also be found anywhere else podcasts are distributed.

Wanna not look like a goober because you claimed "first ever" and someone comes along and shows you evidence that you were not the first ever? Here's a surefire trick:

    Never make that claim.

    Problem solved.

After 26 hours with the 5-y-o, I am beat like a broke dick dog. And I'm arguably in the best shape I've been in in at least two decades.

No idea how parents in their 50s do this stuff full-time. I need a gummy, a nap, and the rest of my Sunday on the couch.

    Good thing she's cute.

Calckey has been down a lot today, so I must have missed the news on what triggered the latest .

    Anyhoo… to the ! It’s different here.

My instance has been mostly down all day, which is a PITA but the cost of living on the bleeding edge.

But it does make me more productive when I don't have a to check in with periodically!

    Evoterra, to fediverse

    Dumb idea of the moment:

Say a competent & committed person launched a premium instance. , let’s say, but it could be any flavor.

By premium I mean that it would require all accounts to pay $15/month.

Further assume that 100 people would sign up for that. (For the record; I would totally sign up for that.)

That’s $1500/month. Not a living wage, but possibly enough to make it worth their while to do all the backend shit people like me cannot do, which likely is not anywhere near a full-time job.

I know the devil is in the details, but on broad strokes… why wouldn’t this work?

    Evoterra,

@HarkMahlberg Yep. Or just refund them their money. One of the benefits of keeping it to ~100 accounts.

    Evoterra,

@kainoa True. But all servers are not created equal. And the other people on a server are at least part of the draw.

People join topic-specific instances. What if this instances “purpose” is to give members better reliability, some say in policies, etc?

I mean, I could pay $15 a month for a managed hosting service to run it for me. Spending the same to get a more personal touch and a voice seems… intriguing.
