I don't list blank accounts, but sometimes if an account has not been followed from a particular server, it can seem blank to people on that server:

You can see the original page for @liverpool

Hey folks I had a good handle on “the other microblogging site,” but I’m still getting the hang of Mastadon. I could use some pointers:

  1. How do I write really funny, witty viral content? (Kidding!)
  2. Can we pin a post?
  3. Can someone teach me sequential number listing? (Kidding!)
  4. Can we make lists of favorite accounts etc?
  5. Are there any curated feeds of, say, political accounts etc etc?
    Thanks!
FediFollows,

@PacMan @giandoh

Hey there!

Yes you can pin posts, you can have up to five pinned posts on your profile (https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-pin-my-posts-on-my-mastodon-profile/)

There is a Lists feature for favourite accounts (https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon/)

There are lots of curated feeds! I run this account that I'm posting from and I have a website at https://fedi.directory with lots of accounts to follow.

To see discussions of particular topics, try following hashtags (https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-follow-hashtags-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/) and joining groups (https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/).

Advice needed on recommending groups:

I would like to mention groups in the daily picks, but this means the post itself would end up in the group, and if people mention the group's address in their replies, the replies would end up in the group too.

I could mention the groups with spaces in the address, but would everyone understand why I'm doing it? Would they find it easy to remove the spaces?

Anyone have thoughts on the matter?

FediFollows,

@josh

The problem is that group links on Guppe aren't so useful at the moment. They don't list any info about the contents of the group at all. For example https://a.gup.pe/u/tea

Chirp links are a bit better, but there aren't many Chirp groups yet.

FediFollows,

@josh

If you follow it from your instance, all the group's posts to the group after that moment will be visible on your instance.

If you want to see past posts from a Guppe group, a workaround is to search for its address on any instance that has at least one existing member of the group. You can do it on that instance's website, it doesn't require logging in.

That will show you the group's complete history right back to the moment the first person on that instance joined that group.

FediFollows, (edited )

@josh

Chirp does this better, you can see a history of a Chirp group's posts by just going to the group's own page. For example: https://chirp.social/@eurovision

FediFollows,

@petrescatraian

They are, but the usual admin tools still exist. So, if someone spams or posts something unsuitable, they can be reported to the local and original server. And mutes/blocks will also mute/block posts on guppe groups because they're technically just ordinary posts.

It's really useful to have this kind of distribution because it pushes content to subscribers, which hashtag following does not do.

Chirp and Friendica groups do have admins, but there are fewer of them AFAIK :/

FediFollows,

@opal

Yeah, was thinking about something like that, maybe with a big warning not to reply, and a link to the fedi.tips page explaining groups.

FediFollows,

@petrescatraian

At a technical level, posts on groups are just normal posts which the group account automatically boosts to its followers.

So, if a post is problematic you can use the usual reporting tools that you would with any post. The post itself isn't on Guppe as such, it's on whichever servers it was posted on and shared with.

Kbin and Lotide are trying for more reddit-like approaches I think? They seem to have much more complex features?

FediFollows,

@largess

As far as I know Guppe, Chirp etc groups are nothing to do with Mastodon, they are based on a different type of server developed by different people.

The groups are platform neutral, they can be followed from other Fediverse server types like Mastodon, Calckey, Friendica etc. This same problem would happen no matter which server type you follow the group from.

FediFollows,

@patrickmcurry

Yes, groups federate much more effectively than hashtags.

Hashtags are basically passive filters for your server's Federated timeline. They will only show you posts that would have been visible to your server anyway.

By contrast, Groups are actively pushing all their content to all the people who subscribe to a group. This means everyone on the group sees every post (unless there are blocks or mutes on the account/server).

Best thing is to use both :)

Unfortunately the direct URL on Guppe doesn't provide any useful info (for example https://a.gup.pe/u/tea).

Also, a lot of people don't know they can copy-paste URLs to follow them.
