Sorry for delay in doing picks of the day last couple of days, am catching up behind the scenes!

Does anybody have info on how many followers each person on the fediverse has? I'm curious what the distribution of follows per person looks like here, and what that means for how information propagates here.

Especially in comparison to the other site. I suspect the follows-per-person distribution is far more egalitarian here. Which is a good thing.

FediFollows,

@NatureMC @Brendanjones @mastodonmigration

The numbers don't tell the whole story either, there tends to be a better quality of reply on here, more thoughtful interaction.

ezra, to random

ok twitter is becoming unusable with the number of ads it is giving me (plus, you know, everything else) so I am going to see if I can give Mastodon a try...

Who are the people from I should be following? Are there any DM groups I should be in? What else should I know?

FediFollows,

@simeon @ezra

What are your favorite recommendations for interesting and engaging Mastodon users? Whether it's artists, writers, tech enthusiasts, or any other fascinating individuals like @ruario✨, I'd love to hear your suggestions.

Just a reminder of a couple of things:

@dpscifi

Umm... no one has to memorise anything? All they do is browse and if they see what they want they follow it. The point of a directory is so that people don't have to memorise, they can look stuff up.

"people don't function this way"

People have been using directories, dictionaries and encyclopedias of various kinds for centuries. Wikipedia is a kind of directory.

"or store them in a list of useful stuff"

...that's what bookmarks are?

FediFollows, (edited )

@dpscifi

Social media is full of people posting lists of recommended follows, the idea here is similar.

If you prefer algorithms that's your choice, but the reason they tend to be shunned on here is that they tend to be opaque and reflective of the biases of their creator.

Algorithms which prioritise engagement can end up promoting some of the most horrible things humanity has ever seen:

https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2022/09/myanmar-facebooks-systems-promoted-violence-against-rohingya-meta-owes-reparations-new-report/

It makes you wonder what algos in the 1930s would have promoted.

@FediFollows do you know of any accounts that offer today in posts?

FediFollows,

@mlabowicz

Umm... the nearest I can think of right now is one that offers today in film/TV posts: @todayonscreen

Alternatively, the hashtag is fairly active so you could follow that?

End-to-end Encryption / picks of the day:

Tutanota has an optional built-in E2EE system which you can use by giving a password to the recipient.

So, if you wanted, you could use Tutanota to do E2EE emails, although you would switch it off if you're sending to someone who doesn't want to use it.

FediFollows,

@HugeGameArtGD @avds @Yuvalne

Oxen is a cryptocurrency, I wouldn't recommend platforms that depend on those.

FediFollows,

@ExcelAnalytics

I have all these suggestions listed in more specific categories on the website at https://fedi.directory

FediFollows, (edited )

@skaphle

If you're looking in the web interface, there's a "Group" label on the group's profile page. Other interfaces and apps may or may not show this label.

Don't worry, you did the right thing by removing the @s from the reply! Thank you! 👍

Really, this is a bug, groups ought not to boost posts by non-members, as people are bound to discuss them without wanting to post to them. This is an issue for the group software developers though.
