no need to install, chrome is linux:

  1. On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings Advanced. Developers.
  3. Next to "Linux development environment,” sefect Turn On.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions. Setup can take 10 minutes or more.
  5. A terminal window opens. You have a Debian 11 (Bullseye) environment.

I have a very small number of old white guy car friends, who are civilized enough to at least STFU (most seem at least marginally better-behaved than that, but we're talking low standard here). I make it a point to let them all know I'm gay/queer.

This is the sort of thing that crowd is passing around. Just FYI.

I take it as a nice temperature-taking from scenes-not-this-one. No one is happy with this shit.

you can chose. Just use the appropriate tools. look up /e/ and fairphone, and fdroid and you're all set. You don't have to use any of the big tech stuff. I don't.

Not only that, but enshitification being what it is, the proprietary service will probably stop being available when you need it most, for example looking for google maps in a god forsaken place with no internet, whereas using OSM with maps on phone bypasses completely the problem.

So glad to see I'm not the only one!!!
I can still hear my son asking why I wanted to buy a map for (whe just arrived in Australia) when we had a GPS in the car !
Not to mention all the friends coming to the boat and wondering why I have papercharts when I have a nice GPS on board as well.
They don't seem to realize that at sea if the battery dies, you can't just call AAA... (It's a sailboat so I can come back with no engine 🙂 )
But yes. Here the keyword is "degrowth".

People (finally ?) realize that the rat race must be over, we must find a way to stop rushing forward with consumerism.
Luckily pretty much everybody agrees on that.
The debate has moved forward and is now on the how.
Probably not fast enough for the planet, but at least we're getting there, hence all the EU regulations for right to repair, unified charger, etc (which will affect the US since producers won't produce 2 different units if they can avoid it).

It was quite funny actually because all I could find was a not very detailed map which I bought nonetheless, until I realized the reason there was nothing on the map was because...they was nothing.
Australian outback is pretty empty.
I started worrying when even the AM radio didn't pick anything.

Yes, there is almost a sensual pleasure to map reading.
In my case it's mostly when I figure out where the boat is on the chart the old way and then it's confirmed by the GPS.
Pencil on chart beats gps trace every time 😉
Even more fun on Channel crossing when you can't see any land.
Thata said yes, gps navigation in a car is brilliant when you're looking for a specific street in an unknown town.

actually there are more. I didn't mention them because (to me) they're old news:

  • LineageOS (the former CyanogenMod, which was very popular here 10 y ago)
  • PostMarketOS
  • PureOS (Librem)
  • Replicant
    They are in various stage of completion for various phones. I keep checking regularly, hoping my current phone will be supported :-).

I flashed a samsung years ago with cyanogen and it worked brilliantly until the mike died.

Just discovered https://droidify.eu.org/download
As you know, the https://fdroid.org market client allows you add any compatible repository, ie izzyOnDroid, KDE, etc to avoid multiplying "store/market" apps.

Droidify does the same, but
a) has a smaller memory print
b) has dozens of alternate repositories pre-programmed, just click to enable !!

Just made the switch 😃
