    @schwa Interesting. To have “the largest interior rectangle” I think you’d technically have to include rotated rectangles? Not necessarily what you’d want in many cases though; what you have seems likely to be what is desired in many cases (not sure what it would be called; “largest axis aligned interior rectangle” maybe?).

    @schwa Cool use case. I was wondering what you needed / wanted this for.

    I had a bit more to say about this and my own site is a great place to do it. I love Mastodon but I'm trying to put more on my own site when I think it makes sense. (And we need more people to do that!)

    @rasterweb I thought this was a really great image when you posted it on Mastodon and totally missed that it was multiple images combined! The subtle “not quite right” feel of the result may have contributed to the strong feeling of viewing a very detailed pencil sketch that it evoked for me.

    My town lets you request street trees be planted anywhere you can keep an eye on them and water if needed. I am responsible for four trees on my block, and just requested three more. It's great to know that I'm literally throwing shade.

    MainActor.run is almost never the right solution. You want to define your isolation statically on the type, via a global actor annotation.

    Dynamic isolation is an escape hatch, and it should set off alarm bells every time.

    @rasterweb I somehow saw the phone with sticker as a FBI badge or something :)

    @GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

    @rasterweb I did recognize it once I did a double take :) The suit just primed my mind to see the badge (probably because I’ve been watching the fast and furious movies lately to make exercise less boring :)).

    Many years ago, I wanted a 3D game engine for mobile platforms, a cross-platform alternative to SceneKit.

    It took a decade, but it is finally coming:

    “I circled right back to where I had begun, to the question of beauty.
    Back to the questions that science does not ask, not because they aren't important, but because science as a way of knowing is too narrow for the task. (1/3)

    GeekAndDad,
    @GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

    Not easy to read at times, despite being very well written, because it articulates and illuminates a worldview western white culture is not well in tune with. But very powerful if you can let go and open yourself to thinking and seeing in new ways, and learning. As we face the reality that our disconnect with nature has wrought this thinking and seeing and learning seems important. (3/3)

    GeekAndDad,
    @GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

    Had my adviser been a better scholar, he would have celebrated my questions, not dismissed them. He offered me only the cliché that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and since science separates the observer and the observed, by definition beauty could not be a valid scientific question. I should have been told that my questions were bigger than science could touch.”

    I loaded a thermal shipping label in the toy camera (after cutting it down to size) and it printed just fine. Thermal is thermal I guess. I should probably find more rolls of thermal paper as well.

    I've started keeping two X-ACTO knives on my desk, one that's fresh for fine cuts and one that's a bit more used for the rough cuts. I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier.

    The fresh one is much better for cutting curves while the other one works fine with a steel cork backed ruler for cutting straight lines.

    GeekAndDad,
    @GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

    @rasterweb A leather strope connected to the desk is handy. My dad had this hanging from his model railroad modeling bench. “Rite Edge” brand.

    Easy to pick up and pull out and do a touch up on a blade while working. Out of the way when not in use.

    GeekAndDad,
    @GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

    @rasterweb A few strokes on a fine ceramic stone will also sharpen one that gets past what a strope can do.

    GeekAndDad,
    @GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

    @rasterweb 🙇‍♂️ Thank you. I do try :)

    My dad was a frugal artist (by necessity) for nearly 6 decades, so all credit to him.

    Since he died and it came to me I’ve used it for kitchen knives and a utility knife. Seems to work well if you don’t wait until the blade is already too dull :)
