So who wants to start a 1990s-style web ring of ham radio blogs?

This is a feature that I really desire on the blog. I am procrastinating on starting. Complete with a forward and back button to take you to the next site in the ring. 😂

Without yet reading the article this headline really reads like propaganda from Monsanto (especially given the relatively recent change in WaPo ownership).

The article seems to talk mostly about honeybees. I'm really curious about how native pollinators are doing.

It's a #GoodFriday so far.

I am a dedicated public servant happily not at the salt mine. I broke another milestone in weight loss. And just now activated a brand-new #POTA park (US-11248 Goodwin State Forest) that's about 5 miles uses from my house. (I've been wanting that one listed in #POTA for years). Only the fourth activation ever for that particular park.

Geojoek,
@Geojoek@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@AE4WX @ai6yr

That sounds like my preferred / ideal park setup. 😂

Geojoek,
@Geojoek@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@AE4WX @ai6yr

Totally understandable. Forest roads up here (in forests that don't have facilities) are often dirt / double track and poorly traveled by anyone who's not explicitly there for the park. Only other folks I run into are hikers and hunters, and both tend to think ham radio is pretty cool when they ask what I'm doing. (Although I am much more careful during shotgun season).

"Classic" Vermont dishes are anything that was popular in New York or Boston from the 1930s to 1980s, as that's primarily whose been living there since then.

(1/x) Following @vees's lead, some really great things about that I still appreciate, having lived the first half of my life there:

  • The people and welcoming culture. There's a truly deep warmth, camaraderie, and ease I feel when visiting my hometown that doesn't exist in a lot of other places. It's genuine.
  • The art and culture scene. Seriously. It is neon-atomic vibrant compared to the 6-state region I currently live in, a lot of other places I've visited.
  • The murals. IYKYK.

For the past however-many-years I've had a (very outdated) profile on there, I get weekly requests for copies of papers I'm 3rd author on, or maps I've published that are freely available on the web. Between that, academia.edu, and LinkedIn, I'm tired of the sheer social media presence I'm expected to have for work.

Has there been any discussion about how the Key Bridge collapse might be affecting I-95 traffic between Balto and NYC?

I was ostensibly going to be driving to Balto to visit family and friends this weekend, and am trying to gauge if it might be better to postpone the trip.

I maintain 2 CR boxes for a friend's bookstore and those filters always look rough when it's time to change them. They were shuffling some books around in their basement and the filters were colored gray not 3 days after I swapped them.

Obstacles in homebrewing ladder line: I foolishly thought 14" zip ties would be long enough, doubled over, to use in a 6" fin tube insulator & have enough extra to loop around the antenna wire and engage the the teeth. Nope!

And it turns out 16" zip ties are too wide to fit through the insulator.

The simplest solution would be to purchase 4" insulators to use with the 14" zip ties. It would add $15 and another two weeks to the project with waiting for them to come in the post.

But...

Antenna work/play time today. I'm testing a little 20m dipole that I built in an inverted V config. It seems to be working well. Low SWR and being heard well on - nicer radiation pattern than my sloper EFHW

I use two for portable ops: One cut for 12m that does both 12 and 10, and one cut for 40m that does 40, 20, 15, and sometimes 17 with the G-90's tuner. Both with great success: was getting out as far as California and Seattle yesterday during my SOTA activation with ~15-20 watts out and 1.5 to 2 SWR on 10.

Best $5 in speaker wire I even spent.

Reading all the lovely tributes to Bob Heil has me testing out using software EQs to improve HF SSB audio / legibility on a webSDR, wondering if I should buy a cheap 12V car audio EQ to put in the shack.

But it occurs to me, I could run the audio through my Linux shack computer and use a Pulse or ALSA equalizer, plus maybe DNR software: it's probably a lot more bang for 0 bucks. I'm concerned about latency and ground loop hum, though.

Folks' thoughts on software vs. hardware EQs for this?

I'm reaching out to the mastodon community to find out if there's anyone in the Houston, Texas area that will be holding an exam session. I tried the Facebook route but that failed miserably and I don't trust the exam session listings. Are their any volunteer examiners in the Houston area that can help steer me in the right direction outside of MeetUp and Facebook. :)

Thank you!
