Been a titterpig since anno dazumal … that is, since the 80’s, and titterpig was a word I learned the other month. Mainly been playing RQ and WFRP in the modern time.

Hey
Any recommendations for books with nonbinary or transmen main characters? Feeling like I could really use the representation, but all I'm finding are transwomen, and that's... not me. As long as it's fiction, any genre is okay.

@bookstodon @CrescentSays The main character in K. B Wagers excellent NeoG series is enby.

I left Goodreads when the recommendations stopped being personalized and just become what Amazon wanted to push at me.

Third time is the charm I have heard! Won again, this time in a three player game and it didn’t take that much longer than with two player.
I’m very impressed, an extremely well oiled game mechanics!

@sunflower @bookstodon I would put in three suggestions:

  1. Telepath by Janet Edwards https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/a8ffb5b8-db55-417f-a5e8-470377db83b3

  2. The Green Man's Heir by Juliet E. McKenna https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/35d7dfeb-0bcc-478f-836d-9df8656fd29d

  3. A Pale Light in the Black by K.B. Wagers https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/cb306824-d1f1-4d30-af58-5ccd1c13710e

All three are excellent and have way less recognition than they deserve.

(and of course I recommend Murderbot, but so do everyone else)

From the bus station at the landward end of the urban archipelago that is to the southeast end at St. Helen Empress, it's only 4.5 km as the seagull flies. But walking the streets, bridges and piazzas as I've been doing all afternoon, it is very very very much not possible to keep to a straight line. Oh my poor legs!

(The dotted blue route on the map is a notional shortest one that I certainly did not follow.)

As if children's books aren't already losing visibility due to censorship now this...

This year Goodreads has removed all children's books categories from their Goodreads Choice Awards, meaning no more or categories. Worse, Graphic Novel & Poetry, have also been eliminated.

Here you can vote to ask them to bring those categories back:

As the times get harsher and companies starts to act ... less benevolent, the Unions starts to respond ... and lets say there is some rough awakening here lately.
Also people has been bribed into lethargy and now suddenly realize that "the company is your family"-crap means that a really abusive parent is present and the the lash is coming out.

Ants are the strange members of the hymenopterans. What defines a "bee" or a "wasp" ?

Flying! Stinging! Ovipositing! Bright warning colors!

Ants looked at the main advantages of being hymenopteran and said... nah. I guess stinging is OK... (Though most ants don't sting.) ... but most of this is nothing compared to going eusocial.

Personally I think eusociality is such a huge advantage this makes sense.

But then why aren't the bees who do both more successful? Are they too specialized?

GoblinQuester,
@GoblinQuester@dice.camp avatar

@futurebird Green biology PhD students gets to to so many strange things during their years.
My thoughts goes still to those who was stumbling around in the Nevada (?) desert holding plastic sheets over a foraging ant to test if changes in the sunlight would affect their abilities to find their way back home again.

emmahunneyball, to boardgames

Man, two days is a LOT of thinking time on . There has to be a happy medium between playing real-time, and playing turn-based where one player takes THE FULL TWO DAYS of thinking time EVERY TURN. By my reckoning this game of Wingspan will take at least TWO MONTHS to complete.

GoblinQuester,
@GoblinQuester@dice.camp avatar

@emmahunneyball I plays a lot of turn based on BGA, and never ever again anything with more than 12h thinking time, because gosh, i want a game finished within a month ...

GoblinQuester,
@GoblinQuester@dice.camp avatar

@RogerBW @emmahunneyball mmm ... I run a lot of feel and inspiration and if it goeas to long between turns I loose focus and interests in reading up on the current state and just ends up "do something whatever" which isn't good for either the game or myself.

GoblinQuester,
@GoblinQuester@dice.camp avatar

@ifixcoinops Lets put it into this perspective: Over here (Sweden) no one under 60 carries cash, and few of those elders than so do neither.
It is not uncommon with shops having "no cash" signs. Even the beggars take "Swish" (a system to send money by phone).
I do not recognize how the cash looks like any longer as they have changed it since I last saw a bill (ten years ago or something).
I use card, and that is seen as old-fashioned, as most uses their phones nowadays.

In many legends, the best place to find the Devil is at a crossroads, which is where Faust made his famous pact. The crossroads represents the person's monumental choice, which direction they're going to take. Is it the road leading to Heaven or to Hell?

GoblinQuester,
@GoblinQuester@dice.camp avatar

@bevanthomas IIRC a cross road (contrary to what I thought) is not a four way cross, but rather the three way T-shape, where the "missing" fourth is the liminal-magic space where gallows/altars/burials should be placed.

seedling, to worldbuilding
@seedling@dice.camp avatar

Writing the start of a worldbuilding blog post. I'm thinking about the title king or queen.

One thing I'm generally doing is making everything a lot more local, with less local authority. You'll generally get a local noble of some kind but whose influence reaches no further than the distance you can ride in a day, and to go beyond that is a big deal. An actual king or queen is pretty rare, and a big deal.

GoblinQuester,
@GoblinQuester@dice.camp avatar

@seedling There is one instance of a Polish King being female. If I remember correctly the only viable (and competent) candidate was a woman, all other would have descended into civil war. But the "constitution said that no queen could rule ... what to do, what to do?
Well, nowhere in the constitution there was anything that the King had to be male!
TADAA! Problem solved. King Jadwiga it is!

aurgh, how many errors can a writer/designer put in a paragraph before it collapse into a black hole and kills us all?
If you are going to use science terms, then either learn something about them (they do mean something you know) or get someone to who do know to read it.
If not, better to use magic languages, or invented words, the advantage of that is also that it is time safe, new science will not make your bad science sound even more pathetic.
