A message for trans folks in the US:
Please start using encrypted comms where you can and VPNs when you can't, especially when talking about trans stuff. The worse things get here, the more important our privacy becomes. If it comes to hiding and escaping from the government, untraceable and encrypted comms will be essential.

We can't rely on the majority of big tech to not sell us out to save themselves.

Google has essentially kneecapped their search system and made it completely unusable. They're forcing their weird GAI LLM search mode on people and requiring you to scroll 4 viewports to get web search results, or dig through their alternative search types menu to just see web results.

The choice in November is dichotomous:
Accelerate Netanyahu's genocide or not
Creating a domestic genocide of trans folks or not
Loss of free elections or not
Loss of access to abortion or not

Biden sucks but his party is whats stopping a national ban on abortion and trans care. Trump explicitly said he'd support Netanyahu and provide more weapons and money. Abortion federally will go the same way it has in red states regardless of what Johnson says. All votes cast or not matter.

If the thing you specifically care about is not on that list, keep in mind, it's not comprehensive. There is no scenario in which Trump is a better choice for anything progressive. A GOP super majority would catapult us into autocracy and fascism. They are solely motivated by punishing their perceived enemies. The first people they'll go after are queer folk and people of color. This is too important to fuck around with.

Yep, it's 2016 again. The media is all in on the Trump win narrative, hanging on his every word and printing it because its good for their business. Trump saying batshit nonsense isn't news. Never was and never will be.

I've got my plans at this point for what happens if Trump wins, and it's not staying in this country. I feel incredibly bad for my trans comrades that can't up and leave (by resources or stubborness). Trump winning is a guarantee of trans genocide.

Democrats are on pace to lose the election this year because Netanyahu decided to start a war. Clearly the US is responsible for what Israel does, and that's a great reason to all but give Donald Trump the authoritarian regime of his dreams.

Bethesda and their parent company Zenimax have yet to apologize for what they did to Leona Faron. For those that don't know, a transphobic manager outed Leona without her permission and then suddenly began lodging complaints about her work. When moved under another manager, the complaints stopped. Sensing a lawsuit, Zenimax leveraged her Healthcare to get her to leave the company, threatening to fire her right before she was to take leave for GCS if she didnt leave willingly.

I'm saddened that a deeply unethically fought war in the Middle East is going to be what ushers in the complete trans genocide in the US. I know enough folks on the left that will take what's happening in Israel and use it as justification to not vote. They care more about that conflict than the people a national ban on trans care will kill. A million+ dead and/or disfigured and degraded trans people in the US over a foreign war we have no control over.

If you don't think a national transgender care ban will happen when the GOP has a super majority, you haven't been paying attention. The right ACTIVELY WANTS what's happening in Gaza right now, at least the religious right do, it's part of their prophecy for the second coming of Jesus. Not voting is ultimately worse for the Palestinian people than voting for democrats. Israel isn't going to listen to anyone.

We need to talk about the recently published WeDistribute Article regarding Mastodon user's response to a new federated service.

To make a long story short, someone tried setting up a website called ContentNation which would display Fediverse posts. To do so it adhered to the ActivityPub protocol, just like every Mastodon server or other Fediverse service. Due to the decentralized nature of the Fediverse this means you could view your own posts on this platform by fetching them, this, again, is possible on every Mastodon server or other Fediverse service. This is how the Fediverse works.

The creator of this platform has essentially created a free Fediverse library with no monetization (no ads, no trackers, no cookies) yet was labeled a “scraper” or “crawler” and, in my opinion, was very mistreated. You can argue about some ActivityPub features being implemented incorrectly or consent for those posts being displayed not being given, but before seeing this as malicious, try seeing it as a new Fediverse developer making mistakes.

Since through this platform you could see every post on the Fediverse, someone posted CSAM (child sexual abuse material), then (others) viewed it through the platform, and then reported ContentNation to their host for “having” CSAM.

Additionally, Kescher, the admin of CatCatNya.com, wanted to “make the crawler crash”. This is just a wonderful way to welcome new developers onto this decentralized platform.

We need to call out and condemn behavior such as this and not see a threat where there could be an opportunity to learn.

The core conceit of federation is mutual exchange. Something like that doesn't generate new content, it simply siphons off existing content and manages to bypass consent while doing it. Mistake or not, it's hard to make that look like a legitimate project. Also what utility does it add? Is it just a window into the fediverse for passers-by or is it something that will allow the bypassing of blocks. The lack of foresight is an issue.

So far I've yet to see someone who wants to do "great things for the whole fediverse" that wasn't a self-dealing hack trying to benefit. Remember when a known bad actor tried to make a central governance group for a bunch of servers? Or when a journalist tried to claim thst blocking his instance (which hosted right-wing apologia) was an assault on free press? Or that time a huge blocklist had an obvious and egregious slant toward blocking queer instances (even without receipts).

They can buy into whatever tech-based messiah complex they wish, at the end of the day they're still single-mindedly focused on what direction the line goes. If they weren't, they'd be working on FOSS project. The fact that they want to pay wall and blackbox a technology they see as extremely beneficial to society says enough on its own.

What bothers me the most about LLMs is that they're actually neat tech. They can do some really cool things. They are not AI, they don't need to be in every product, and their advocates are extremely obnoxious. They're the same people that said Blockchain was the future before crypto crashed, they're the same people who thought NFTs were a brilliant until the NFT market crashed, and they'll be all about LLMs until the market for their products crashes.

I'm still struck at times by the weird dynamic that very masculine cis men have with other people they perceive as men. They're so quick to call them "girls" if they don't maintain certain (mostly awful) behaviors, but as soon as they see a trans women, suddenly being a man is an intrinsic and immutable characteristic.

I just wish for one fucking minute these people would have a modicum of internal consistency.
