Merivale at Colonnade at 2:30 pm on a Friday afternoon when the Queensway is closed. Do people not learn to keep intersections free?

With the opening of the Chief William Commanda bridge, it was time to create an update of my subway style map with routes of the Canadian capital region (and yes, not all mups are on here). The map shows a network of routes, simular to how subway maps look like, to visualize the cycling opportunities on multi use pathways in the area. This map doesn’t show bike lanes on roads.

Last year I created a food map of the Merivale Road area. I counted a lot more places than I had expected. This year I recreated it, with an overview of who’s new and who’s gone. Spoiler alert: Italian is decreasing, Asian is growing.

Read more in my latest blog, including an updated map which includes two safer suggestions: https://hansonthebike.com/2024/02/08/food-map-merivale-road-2024/

Interesting!! This morning's paper reports on the NCC mulling the Queen Elizabeth Drive in as an alternative for the Rideau Canal Skateway after several disappointing skate seasons. Here’s the article copied for you: https://hansonthebike.com/2024/04/01/rideau-canal-ottawa/

You don’t need fancy tools to figure out how fast a driver goes in your neighbourhood street. Counting the seconds for a certain distance and plug that into a simple formula gives you a pretty accurate clue. Read more on my latest and blog:

I was walking in the Arboretum today with my mother and there was a continuous flow of cyclists on all bike models and all ages and body shapes. So cool to see. And not a single aggressive cyclist trying to squeeze by. Also the number of e-bikes must be growing exponentially. A great experience. The Fletcher garden is worth a visit with all the fall colours and seeds.

The best route through downtown Ottawa runs currently through Quebec 🤔

The City of has been building more infrastructure this year, from several large multi million dollar projects to more mundane short connections. Some projects are financed from underground infrastructure renewal, others from dedicating cycling, pedestrian safety budgets. Here is part 2 of my 2023 overview. Note: my web host has not been reliable, you may get a ‘resource limited’ message. Try later or refresh your browser. Working on it.

Except last year, when the in didn't open for skating, the average opening date for the skating rink over the last 10 years was January 13.

Between 1972 and 1982 the average opening date was December 21, three weeks earlier.

This graph shows the 5 year moving average over the last 45 years (X-axes). The latest the canal rink ever opened was February 2, in 2001.

It is not too late to give up hope, but it needs to be really cold soon else we miss out on another season.

Looking into tickets and it is quite cheap if you book in advance. One way ticket - Toronto (before taxes) is 54 dollars. Return as well. CAA membership gives an extra 5 dollar discount one way.

Even January and February still have good pricing. Friday and Sunday are more expensive.

Using containers in an pilot is a great step forward but reading the Reusables website, it looks like it might involve UberEats and an app which sounds to me like an overly complicated system with too many players. But again, the pilot might be different from Reusables business model. I just add that the already accepts containers (not plastic bags), which has made me visiting them more often.

Yesterday I had to pick someone up at the airport. It was rush hour, it was raining, there were strong winds, there was a flash freeze warning in . I left in time to cover the 10 km. Part of the route is the Airport parkway. I merged and crawled at 30-40 km per hour. After Hunt club, traffic had evaporated. And I was back to 80 kph. On an early morning without traffic, I drive it in 12-15 minutes. Yesterday it was…..20 minutes. Is that worth a $100 million dollars Airport Pkw expansion?

“Avid cyclist” alert.

Why does the press always use that? It is not like you ever read “Sean, an avid driver”

Last Sunday, I hung out at the Hartwells Locks in #Ottawa. I counted over 100 people with a bike crossing the locks in 20 minutes. That is >300 an hour.

Lots of people with e-bikes now and several people struggling getting the bike on to the locks. This definitely needs improvement.

Lots of older folks, clearly touring for the morning or the day, so happy to see that. Our pathways allow for great routes with little interference from car traffic.

A person in a blue shirt cycling on a bike (that appears a bit too small). Another person is looking away with his arms crossed. An historic lockmaster's house is seen in the background.
Three people are crossing locks at a canal. the old winch system is visible. One person has a a basket on the front and a milk crate at the back. The other two cyclists are walking their bike too, in shirts and T shirts. Lots of green in the background.
Over a dozen people with bicycles are visible in a a setting of trees and locks at the Rideau canal. Several people are waiting to cross, while others just crossed and are regrouping.

The Zena bus stop on Baseline. 300 m to one light, 600 m to the other light, no side walk. Large snowbanks in winter. All for the convenience of drivers. Btw at roughly the same spot, a young driver going EB crashed across the median and ended up in the farm land here, killing himself and the passenger. But O, dumb pedestrian trying to get home crossing Baseline into Zena.

The cushions of my Bose headphones started to come apart. There are replacement ones, but they are not cheap: CAD 37 at Bose and CAD 25-ish on Amazon (before tax and shipping).

Last winter, I repaired parts of them, but now the other half came loose (basically the glue is giving up I think). So I took a needle and threat and sewed the split halves back together.

Two black headphone ear cushions are sitting side by side. They look like new again, after the seals that had come apart have been sewed together again by Hans on the Bike himself, saving over 30 Canadian dollars.

A road has to be closed for possibly a week bc a driver (not ‘a car’) does something stupid. Just imagine someone on an would cause a road to be closed for a week and it would be the most read article on CTV for days with the traffic trolls out in full force.
