As someone who is aging. Late thirties. How can I keep my finger on the pulse of current trends, particularly in music?

As an example. I grew up in hip-hop but at a certain point I stopped listening to new people and realised recently that I’d slept on some bangers. Like Kendrick particularly, but even people like Juice WRLD and Xxxtentacion....

Hikermick,

Asset forfeiture was a big part of the War On Drugs. Here in Cleveland the cops confiscated a drug dealer’s hot rod car (Trans Am I think) and used it for a patrol car, painted just like the other cop cars. The Feds used to have to publish a list of all seizures, maybe still do. Once a week it was in USA Today and it was 4 pages long. IIRC Mid 90’s Congress passed a law hampering the ability to seize and the weekly lists were 2 pages long after that

Hikermick,

Maybe quit ordering out and having it delivered?

Hikermick,

My family had one of these. When playing with it I had no idea what I was doing but occasionally I could pick up sounds like the drone at the beginning of Empire Strikes Back

What are some free interests/things/hobbies you can do in the city?

I live alone and I’m just wasting away my time here. It’s actually making me very depressed to be honest. I do live in the city which makes think there ought to be at least something to do out here. Though I can’t really afford to spent money on it every day....

Hikermick,

Might help if you name what city you are in. If there is a college there are often cheap/free things you can latch onto even if you aren’t a student.

Hikermick,

IMO if/when people snap out of it they just fade away and don’t post about it. We all have our pride. These people were convinced they were so much smarter than everyone else, that’s a tough pill to swallow. The same thing happens with cults and political beliefs. That’s why I try to keep things light hearted and civil when debating politics. Leave wiggle room for people to come around. It’s not about humiliating them, it’s about seeing the light

Hikermick,

Isreal is screwed without the US. Without its backing it will turn to Russia. It’s a valuable ally for the US due to it’s location and intelligence services

In the mid 2000’s gasoline prices rose to over $4 a gallon and the interest in alternative fuels spiked and so did commercials for energy companies on cable news channels. I don’t know where there’s a ConocoPhilips but I saw their commercial a thousand times where grandpa takes his grandson fly fishing and they release the trout they caught. Same with the Areva commercial with the catchy pop song and cute animated windmill graphics youtu.be/k3_hLTKiIZE?si=Rl7Q1nFfKTgZABvy

Hikermick,

If nobody wants to work then who the hell are all these people on the freeway during rush hour?

Hikermick,

You’re getting down voted but no one has answered you.

Hikermick,

Fuck em. Stab me in the back and I’ll go full on scorched earth

Hikermick,

I’ve done a few trips. When everything is on time it’s a great experience IMO. When it’s running late it can suck. A few things I tell interested people:

Have a different mindset compared to flying. A plane trip is hectic and cramped but it’s over in a few hours, it’s a means to getting somewhere. Your vacation begins when you land. On a train the voyage is part of the vacation. It’s chill and you’ll meet nice people.

Amtrak has a website where you can see where the trains are at in real time. It’ll tell you if they are on time or how late they are running. This is real nice because you can put off going to the station if they are hours late. The first time I rode they didn’t have this yet and we felt trapped.

I got the small room (Roomette I think?) twice. It’s small but so am I. It’s two seats facing one another that fold down into a one person bed. Another bed folds down overhead. I got my parents a full size room for their 50th anniversary. It was nice but they spent their awake hours entirely in the observation car.

In my experience their wifi sucks but may have improved. Download books and movies in advance.

Bring your own drinks and snacks! Two meals a day were included with the rooms.

When I took the Coast Starlight I watched a YouTube video in advance that gave good advice about when and where to sit in the observation car for seeing Mount Shasta.

Safe travels!

Hikermick,

Yeah way easier now am I right? Maybe you should post instructions for the the old people who don’t know how

Hikermick,

Friend of a friend of the working class

Is there a gadget or something that helps find, kill or repel mosquitoes?

I read there were genetically modified mosquitoes that only bred males. Is that commercially available? What about that laser that zapped roaches, has it been improved to zap mosquitoes too? Maybe there is a guide somewhere on how to build a DIY Anti Mosquitoes Air Defense System?

Hikermick,

If you have a mosquitoe problem first step is prevention. They breed in standing water and it doesn’t have to be deep. Clogged gutters are a common culprit

Hikermick,

It’s really bothering me that he isn’t wearing hearing protection. Take it seriously

Hikermick,

Horseback Jesus was a sub on reddit that never saw much traffic. I think there’s more activity in this post than there ever was there. Fuck You Bob was the well known character in Kent Ohio. He would flip off school buses and mutter “fuck you” when you passed him on the sidewalk. Legend has it he ate an entire sheet of acid to avoid getting busted

Hikermick,

Here in Ohio the GOP led legislature just ignores the antigerrymandering measures passed. The state Supreme Court struck down their district maps. The federal Supreme Court sides with the GOP

Hikermick,

My mom worked for weight watchers for 30 years. I’ve never had a weight problem but I learned a lot from her when I wanted to shed a few pounds. The system they used was based on points, you were allowed so many points a day, some things had zero points and some things were surprisingly high in points. I bring this up whenever I see someone starving themselves or eating like a rabbit. Under their plan you can eat whatever you want, it’s all about portions. When people try drastic changes they give up easier

What's a common occurrence in your hobby that you think shouldn't be?

For me it’s driving while under the influence. If you couldn’t tell, I like me some ganja. However I have long since held the belief that it is utterly insane to drive while under the influence of most substances, with maybe nicotine and caffeine being the exception. All too often I see other stoners smoking and driving,...

Hikermick, (edited )

That’s why every band has a leader and a handful of other people that don’t understand why their ideas aren’t being acted on. Same thing happens in other group scenarios

Hikermick,

Oops I meant to say “aren’t” not “are” but I think you got the idea
