Yay! I got my US passport with my updated legal name!

Now I can schedule a trip to the foreign Social Security Office in Oslo because the US still does not have a central identity register.

Want to write italics?
It really 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 work.
Want to write bold?
𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 works too.

However, this was done using a Unicode text converter, and it would be better, if we could do this through the app.

But maybe it is a design choice that this is not possible — perhaps to ensure the timeline does not look too messy.

Try it: https://capitalizemytitle.com/italic-text-generator/

@randahl @lukem It has nothing to do with the quality of the screen reader. These symbols have specific meaning and are correctly read as their intended meaning, not as a visual hack.

Mastodon does not yet support rich text authoring, but it does support rich text viewing from more capable servers.

Jeremiah,

@randahl @lukem You can add an affirmative reaction on the feature request for some rich text authoring on Mastodon to show support for this: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/853

Questions for software engineers about estimates. Feel free to answer any of these in any order.

Have you ever had an explicit conversation about how to estimate projects? How did you learn?

If you feel that you were never taught the skill in any real sense, what do you feel you're doing at work when you're asked for estimates? Are you making it up? Have you developed your own personal guidelines?

On average, how confident are you in your own estimates? How do you measure success?

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@polotek When I worked at Fitbit, the company had Ken Rubin teach a 2-day agile training once a quarter to new hires. This gave everyone a shared, foundational understanding of how to break problems down into known knowns and unknowns, how to estimate effort or timebox until able to estimate effort.

Many of us were skeptical at first, but we did actually get much better at estimating at the team level. Success was how accurate the team was in delivering the work committed to in a 2 week sprint.

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@polotek The techniques I learned from Ken Rubin’s agile training worked well on other teams I managed at Spotify & Stripe. With about 2 months of data and collaboration, teams could start breaking down multi-quarter projects to estimate with reasonable accuracy.

For known knowns, I used story point estimation <https://www.scrumdesk.com/breaking-free-from-the-traditional-approach-agile-estimation-techniques-for-better-project-management/> with this guide for estimating effort <https://www.jeremiahlee.com/posts/agile/user-story-estimation/>.

Known unknowns used timeboxed investigation with output of learning or estimatable user story.

My apologies to the Slashdotted admin.

"Please don't share our content because of server load" sounds an awful lot like an admin/config problem.

Also sounds a lot like a plea for a centralized link preview farm.

Oh no the server is Melton, @lisamelton

Anyone venturing into this solution space?

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@mrcopilot This sounds like a problem best solved by websites experiencing this problem adding caching on their end (Varnish/Squid server or Fastly/Bunny/CDN service) than Mastodon et al changing anything.

Sounds Right is a music initiative to generate royalties from the sounds of planet Earth to fund conservation projections.

At least 50% of royalties from songs that feature NATURE and 63% of royalties from ambient nature sounds will be donated to biodiversity conservation and restoration projects. The project is overseen by the UN.

Ellie Goulding, Brian Eno, and V of BTS already have songs out.

Jeremiah, to ADHD
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

The hostility of governments towards tourists with ADHD who just want to take their medication is a true test of the effectiveness of that medication.

Within the EU, I must fill out a form with my pharmacist for them to file for each trip beyond Sverige’s border.

For my trip to Korea, I must download 2 Word docs from a website in Korean, submit a copy of my passport, flight information, notarized English translation of my Swedish prescription, and email it all 10 days before travel.

#ADHD

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

Given the decades of research, prescription, and millions of people using the medication, I think governments should stop treating people with ADHD like they are potential drug mules.

People buy enough alcohol in duty free stores at the airport to get shitfaced and that’s ok, but someone with a pill a day for the duration of their trip so their executive function works is a 🚩? Sure, Jan…

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

Update: Korea told me to “leave [my] narcotics at home” or “postpone [my] trip if cannot function without” because I submitted my application less than 10 work days in advance of my trip. There are 2 Korean holiday periods coming up I did not account for not being work days.

Fuck my executive function, I guess. 😞

The Getty Museum released high resolution images of ~87,000 artworks it owns under the @creativecommons CC0 free culture license. More museums should do this!

You can print and sell Vincent van Gogh’s famous irises as much as you want, but the hope is that people will remix and build new masterpieces on the culture that came before them.

As I prepare for , I’m curious if there is anything you would like me to write about next month.

Some things I’m considering:
• /now page update
• my ADHD journey last year
• my complicated relationship with religion thanks to Derrida, Darwin, and dick
• the origin of developer experience
• creator economy economics
• marketing tactics for the social web
• why GDPR is amazing and not to be feared
• autonomy, alignment, accountability in teams
• thoughts on Fitbit and InVision

Good grades and a successful career hid a lifetime of suffering. Burnout at age 38 revealed signs that had been there my entire life. My hope is that sharing my ADHD symptoms and compensation strategies will help others get help sooner.

Jeremiah,

@mellowfish Indeed. My investigation also included an evaluation for autism, obsessive-compulsive, traumatic stress, depression, and bipolar disorders because of the high comorbidity. My psychologist first presented why I did not (also) have those before concluding with why my symptoms must be ADHD. I appreciated learning a little more about them in case I ever did see myself in those descriptions.

Nobody seems to have noticed it but the Mastodon project have been granted funding by @NGIZero in the Entrust fund.

This is amazing, but the best part is that this funding is targeted at implementing… Quote Posts 🎉

This effort started several months ago and we already did some preliminary work, but this will be a big feature for our next 4.4 version. This funding will cover the ActivityPub work, as well as backend, web frontend and official mobile app implementation.

@renchap @NGIZero So happy to read this! And still so happy we got to meet up at the NGI Forum.
