There are two problems that are coming for Mastodon of which apparently an awful lot of people are unaware. These problems are coming for Mastodon not because of anything specific to Mastodon: they come to all growing social media platforms. But for some reason most people haven't noticed them, per se.

The first problem is that scale has social effects. Most technical people know that scale has technological effects. Same thing's true on the social side, too.

@siderea As someone around during the transfer of ownership for LJ, it was shocking to behold. Not only that, but it opened up how the Russian goverment was using LJ to crack down on dissidents, as well as the privacy and security issues that brought, and it's an excellent example that many may not be aware of.

I was on LJ for Buffy fandom and it seemed like each fandom had its own thoughts on the situation too, which didn't help matters.

Nov. 25: What's a better (more truthful) name for a famous novel?

Harsh expose about the plight of carriage horses in the eighteenth century disguised as a family-friendly horse story

aka Black Beauty

Or, you will bawl every single time you read this book. I do.

Holy moly. I didn't think I had gender dysphoria (like it's normal to grow up and be an adult thinking you're "bad at being a girl/woman") but this has blown my mind in an aha-holy shit kinda way. Amazing work here.

@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@JoscelynTransient Thank you. I had always attributed my cPTSD to my unrecognized/undiagnosed autism (finally going through testing to see if that can be made official), but now since I cannot be gender truthful at my job (nonprofit software, clients are mostly churches) and my health precludes me from finding another job - the need to shift into self-employment is even more paramount now.

Layers upon layers, but just knowing that they're there is excellent. Thank you again!

Regular reminder that even vast swathes of the US still have shitty internet connectivity:
“One of Wisconsin's most isolated places is finally getting fast internet”
https://www.wpr.org/one-wisconsins-most-isolated-places-finally-getting-fast-internet

Please consider this when choosing your framework, library, dependencies, third-party services, 9MB background images (looking at you, recent event), fonts, etc. Not everyone is using your high-end system, massive display, and fast connection.

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@aardrian And some of us live in states (Missouri) where the goverment refused some broadband money, some cities/locals took it, and even then, it's very spotty. My local carrier (20MBps/"hi fi" tower to tower) won't sign up for the broadband benefit b/c they don't want "goverment in their business" (direct quote).

I'd love to have 60K to buy the place on the highway (5 mi away) that's for sale so I could have fiber, am expecting it to take up to 5 years to come here via utility poles - maybe.

Some people have to read piles. I have to read boxes, whole cardboard containers I’ve had stacked up for years waiting for me to get around to perusing their contents.

Anyway I’m finally reading Guy Gavriel Kay’s . @bookstodon

@welltemperedwriter @bookstodon Likewise though my boxes are mostly filled with nonfiction on my various areas of interest, but yes TBR-boxes are a must!

Autistic special interests/stimming as seen "in the wild" (of our SUV 😂 )

Spouse: 130
Me: Ooh, what a pretty gray. Of course a young amish man has a flashy horse.
Spouse: What? I was counting train cars.
Me: And I was looking at the horse on that Amish cart. It's a gray, so that's flashy for the Amish.

(Ironically we were on the drive home from the first of two testing days to see if I can get my official DX)

Finished a meet and greet to learn more about a new position and I am absolutely spun because it sounds amazing and they sound like a company who cares.

medical insurance? time off? sick time? paid holidays? It was like they were speaking a strange and foreign language after working as the only person in this department since November 21 w/o vacation or even a boss who would notice in under a week if I died.

Light a candle. Pray. Send good vibes. We'll do interviews after Tgiving

That being said, if you know of a company hiring someone who has done tech support for about 20 years, willing to learn new software, some sql knowledge, experience w/ most software platforms (office - Asana - Monday.com - all the newsletters, etc.. WordPress and plugins, etc.) and who would be willing to hire flexible schedule and pay at least $16/hr let's talk.

Finishing BS in Religious Studies/Psych this semester and accepted to grad school.

I think a lot of technology of the last ten years has been Anti-Librarian Technology. Not necessarily on purpose, but I think there's an economic feedback loop that happens.

When we build systems around files and folders, an external agent can help build organizational structure. The core competency of a librarian is that: how to organize and retrieve information.

Ever since the search engine, tech companies have been gunning for the librarian job. But they can only do it with totalizing influence over the problem. They have to own the data. They have to provide the informational structure. And they do this at great cost to longevity of information, and the ability to comprehensively organize.

This is done in service of users who don't have staff librarians, or who don't want to do their own maintenance of their information structure. That's most people, really, but it's a shame, because what we've been left with now is that the dominant technological tools we have for information are controlling, and unorganizable. How many organizations are there where there's a bunch of google docs, most of them made with organization accounts, but sometimes shared from people's personal accounts. Which we find by searching our email for links, not consulting organized directories?

How many do we search for? how many do we end up with conflicting copies of half-baked versions? How many times do we confuse last year's edition for this, because they're both named “Board presentation”? How often do both get edited, and both end up with a date of “last week”?

And the feedback loop that drives this is the UX and user retention loop, since most users don't have organizational drivers, companies who build any system at all, even if it's bad, win out over those who don't. But what's lost in the totalizing effect of that is the ability to organize systemically for those who can, or wish to learn.

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@aredridel This is something I've really noticed in the tech support space. The software I support could generously be called "legacy" and relies heavily on a folder structure and file paths, and I'm finding a lot of the people using it have only used "apps" on their computers and have no idea how to manage files and folders within windows.

One of the reasons why I detest windows 10 is that it's making it harder and harder to use those structures as well.

It's interesting that the same thing happens when I set the microwave oven for 1-0-0 as when I set it to 6-0. A weird mathematical conundrum.

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@JeremyMallin It bothers me so much when I set the microwave to 90 seconds and it changes to 1:30. Like "that's not what I said." Even though I know they're the same. I figure it's the 'tism.

Any of my mutuals know about starting/running a newsletter and would be willing to help me out a little bit? LMK. Or give me a , maybe a kindly stranger will see it and reach out.

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@etherdiver Not a mutual, but I've been running newsletters for probably close to two decades or more. Maybe I can help?

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@etherdiver So I'd ask a couple of questions

  1. How are you capturing leads? Are they coming from a website or are you just tossing out a link on social media? Either one is valid, but you want integration from the start if possible.

  2. Are you looking to monetize?

  3. Are you looking for open source/free options or do you want to pay?

  4. Are you a WordPress person?

Substack and Email Octopus are both excellent free starter options. Email Octopus does more integration. 1/

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@etherdiver
AVOID - Mailchimp or Mailerlite if at all possible. Mailchimp is owned by Intuit now = big data grab Mailerlite is just a PITA.

Otherwise, I am a HUGE proponent of newsletters. Own your own audience!

I use Sendy (paid, but self-hosted) for now, but am hoping to switch to Mautic which looks to be an open source version of Active Campaign. (bells & whistles, I think!)

Any other questions - just ask. //

@Autistrain @actuallyautistic @neurodiversity May I suggest the first book in the Neurodivergent Voices series: Grief Volume 1. This is an excellent volume of dealing with the many ways grief shows up in our lives.

Available in print and ebook from most retailers:

(Also gentle self promotion that Epona Muse Publishing is looking for essays on many of our "open until filled" anthologies. (https://publishing.eponaauthorsolutions.com)

@hosford42 @actuallyautistic @neurodivergence Inflammation is caused by stress within the body. I suspect it's a catch-22. Given how badly we are at diagnosing neurodivergence did the stress of being ND in a NT world cause the inflammation or did the inflammation come first, and if so, what was the original cause?

@Rhube @bookstodon Thanks. I have big plans for this property, but I'm also concerned about controlling the number of buildings I'd have to heat w/ no one in them to keep pipes from freezing.

Town is ~25 miles away with lots of hotels, but I'm not sure I'd ever do bigger events where we'd have more than the rooms I'm planning here.

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@SteveClough @bookstodon True, which is why I'm thinking lots of lighting and covered and a short distance. I'm disabled, so I'm trying to think of as much accessibility as possible, though logistics unfortunately private bathrooms aren't feasible for many reasons.

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@Rhube @bookstodon I'm glad you spoke up. I dream of doing a bigger conference at which point yeah, that's probably in town, but know for my own peace of mind here on the property, it'd be smaller or even someone who just wanted to get into the woods and write for a week.

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@peachfront @Rhube @bookstodon Oh that would so not happen here. I'm neurodivergent and we don't drink so while there is a common area and there'd be beverage storage and such, con-party style retreats would not be my style at all. They're too much for me even at conventions.

@ahrimans_erbe @actuallyautistic I'm not sure that they're masking per se as it would apply to an autistic population, but what this person has learned in psychology is that a lot of what NT people do is based on making themselves look better compared to their peers or other social groups. So there's a huge jostling for position that IMO NT people don't do to that extent, possibly b/c our energy is spent trying to mask?
