@Lunatech@infosec.exchange

I'm primarily interested in tech stuff but I am not a programmer or developer. I use #MacOS and #Linux but am not an expert in either. Unfortunately I am finding that as I grow older, a lot of the things that used to be fun and interesting no longer are, and tech stuff just seems generally more difficult.

I'm somewhat #liberal but if you go on rants about people who eat meat, or think Americans should give up their cars and ride bicycles (even in the dead of winter) or some similar nonsense, then you probably won't want to follow me. I know climate change is happening, but there are solutions that people will accept and solutions thet they won't, or that are just plain impractical for many people.

I'm mildly interested in #spiritualality. At one time, years ago, I would have identified as a Christian but not any more. I'm not sure if I left Christianity or it left me, but I'm very over and done with that, but still have the emotional scars!

So apparently is telling their users "1Password Classic will stop working soon. As of July 1, 2023, this extension will no longer be compatible with your browser." Now what this really means is that if you are not willing to trust their cloud-based storage you can kindly go fork yourself (also if you want to continue with 1Password you'll have to pay again to upgrade, which some users suspect was the point of all this in the first place). See this link:

https://1password.community/discussion/139547/is-transition-from-1password-classic-required

So if you want to only store your passwords on your local machine (or on a server you control), the alternative you hear a lot about is and that is certainly one alternative. But if you are used to 1Password you may think it ugly and clunky. It's not that it doesn't work, and I'm sure the penguin-heads out there would like it because it's quite configurable. But that also implies that it's a bit difficult to configure and the one thing you really can't configure is any kind of theme, and if ever a piece of software needed the ability to use alternate themes it is KeePassXC (did I mention it is ugly, especially on a Mac? Of course that is very much a matter of personal opinion! And yeah, what I really mean is it doesn't have the look and feel, not in the slightest).

After trying that we started looking for other alternatives and came across . It appears that the desktop version is free to use, but if you want it on your phone and you want to store more than 25 passwords you have to pay, and there are certain other conditions where you may want to or need to pay. But out of the box, so to speak, it looks MUCH nicer than and also the operation seems a lot smoother and better integrated with (once you add their Firefox extension).

Mainly we tried it on a but we also installed it on a box too (Ubuntu desktop). It looks and works a lot like 1Password (at least moreso than KeePassXC). I am not saying it is perfect and honestly if 1Password had not decided to tell their customers "use our cloud service or f**k off" (not exactly in that way, they are polite Canadians but that's how it comes across) we'd keep using it, but if they want to lay down an ultimatum and are willing to kick all their self-stored customers to the curb, so be it.

I know some people love cloud-based services and some people love 1Password and if that's you I will not try to change your mind. We definitely don't love cloud-based services, and those have already bitten users of some other password managers in the butt (coughLastpasscough), and I know the 1P folks seem to think their vaults are invincible, and maybe they are but we don't want to take the risk of them being wrong about that. But if you're also not willing to make that leap of faith and you just can't get into KeePassXC, then maybe Enpass would be a good alternative.

Oh and before anyone feels the need to note that the 1P classic software itself will probably continue to work for some time after July 1, that may be the case but you can see where they are headed and I'd rather move to something else before the day comes when 1P classic is no longer useable. And also I do know there are many other alternatives out there; I am not meaning to imply that KeePassXC or Enpass are your only choices. But I don't have time to look at all of them and also am not really interested in any programs that haven't been updated in years.

Which version do you prefer and why?

Lunatech,

@nixCraft Honestly, the AI version, it just seems to flow a little better. But it is only a slight improvement.

Unionized Maryland Apple Store Workers Request 10% Raise and Option to Accept Customer Tips https://www.macrumors.com/2023/05/03/unionized-maryland-apple-store-negotiations/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

Lunatech,

@macrumors WTF? WHY on earth would anyone want to tip an store employee? Do that many customers actually attempt to tip them? This seems like a very strange request!

  • Lunatech,

@neil I live in the USA, as far as I am aware we can't even do that here (might be wrong but if so I have no idea how it would be done).

They released on the Apple app store yesterday and I thought I'd give it a try but for some reason all the buttons except reply are greyed out (so you can't boost, favorite, bookmark, etc.) and when I tried to send a message to the developers asking about it I was limited to maybe 100 or 200 characters, didn't count them but it was a very small amount. Maybe those are things you only get if you buy the pro version? But if so, that's not the way to induce people to buy the pro version, those things are basic to Mastodon functionality. Anyway I went back to using the web version and the only reason I haven't deleted Mona altogether is that it will let me quickly read through the timeline without showing me toots I have already seen, which is my #1 complaint about web-based Mastodon. But honestly I never paid for a Twitter app, and I am not about to pay for a Mastodon one either. So if you feel the same about not paying for a Mastodon app, you probably should avoid Mona (unless they fix this issue) because the free version is far too limited.

Well, is very cool! Just started playing around and wow... blown away 💥

What is Calckey? Think of joining a Mastodon server, but instead the UI is a really fun Twitter, and has lots of cool features. You see Mastodon posts and Mastodon users can see your posts. It's like using a different email client.

If you have five minutes, give it a try. You don't need to move your account or anything, just open up a new Calckey account and play around. Here's the link >>> https://calckey.org/

    Lunatech,

@mastodonmigration In can you edit a post after you have published it?

    Lunatech,

@mastodonmigration Okay, thanks, if you see that it has been implemented, please consider tooting that out. That is a big deal for those of us who are terrible typists! 😀

Kudos to the appliance repair guy who instructed me to have my husband come home from work to… turn off the circuit breaker, in this year of two thousand and twenty three when it’s literally on the wall 4 feet away and gods help me what human doesn’t know how to flip a circuit breaker it’s a basic life skill?

    Lunatech,

@hacks4pancakes You should name and shame that S.O.B.!

Apparently a lot of subscribers are unable to use the service because all they get is a blue screen. Some say they would like to unsubscribe because of this but cannot because... all they get is a blue screen!

Amazon FireTV users seem to be particularly affected, but web users are as well.

A question for people who have moved from one Mastodon Server to another.

I would love to know the reasons that you changed instances so I can better understand what people like, and want, in the Fediverse, and don't like.

I moved once, but only because I wanted to run my own instance. I loved the instance that I was on (social.linux.pizza) before coming here.

Please share. Boosting is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

    Lunatech,

@Jerry I moved twice. The first time was because I couldn't stand the small 500 character limit for toots on my first choice. I detest posts that are broken up into multiple toots, whether I am reading them or writing them. So my first move was to a server with a high character limit.

Unfortunately I quickly discovered that instance was running old software that did not allow editing of a toot once it had been posted, so I moved yet again to an instance that lets you make toots of up to 11,000 characters in length AND that lets you edit toots you have previously posted.

Still I am not really satisfied. I would move again in a heartbeat if I could find an instance that would always remember where you left off reading and never throw you to another place in your timeline if you load more toots, or if you go to another place in the interface and then come back, or even of you close the web page entirely and come back later. I hate having to scroll back through hours of new toots to get back to where I left off reading. That is my #1 complaint about Mastodon, you simply can't save your place in your home timeline and come back to it later.

The other thing that would induce me to move again would be if an instance offered the option to never see the same toot more than once. If I wrote it, favorited it, starred it, or bookmarked it then I don't want to see it again unless I am specifically looking for posts I have previously starred or bookmarked - those posts should not show up multiple times in my home timeline! Even if I have just read it before, if the software has ANY way to detct that I already read something then I don't want to see it again. Feels like we waste SO MUCH TIME reading the same toots over and over. That is my #2 complaint about Mastodon!

    Lunatech,

    @Jerry Yes, infosec.exchange allows 11,000 character posts.

Sooo … I’m recording of my home. I’d like to stream it to an offsite location, so that I can e.g. find out what caused a fire after my house burned down, or who broke in (at least until they destroy the cameras & storage). Of course, I don’t trust the remote server, it should not be able to look at the footage. So, . But it can’t lose any data when the connection gets interrupted. Ideas? compatibility preferred. Some more thoughts in the second toot … 👇

    Lunatech,

@scy I can't answer all your questions but I will suggest that the video data be saved as a .ts stream because with most video formats, if the file isn't closed properly it can be viewed (there may be a way to make it playable again but if so I am not aware of it). With a .ts stream saved to a file with a .ts extension, an incomplete (not properly closed) file will play just fine up until the last incomplete frame, which is usually only the last second or two. I would test that to make sure, but I think that would address your concerns about losing data if the stream gets interrupted. Provided, of course, that you have some way to generate a new filename each time you start another save, so the old file doesn't get overwritten.

I do not know if you can recover an encrypted .ts file in the same way, though. Again you run into the issue that a lot of software will just throw up its hands and refuse to touch a file that was not properly closed. The internal .ts data could be fine but if you can't get it out of the encrypted container then it's just as bad as if you'd saved it as an .mp4 file or some other format that must be properly closed to be viewed.
