@Lunatech@infosec.exchange

I'm primarily interested in tech stuff but I am not a programmer or developer. I use #MacOS and #Linux but am not an expert in either. Unfortunately I am finding that as I grow older, a lot of the things that used to be fun and interesting no longer are, and tech stuff just seems generally more difficult.

I'm somewhat #liberal but if you go on rants about people who eat meat, or think Americans should give up their cars and ride bicycles (even in the dead of winter) or some similar nonsense, then you probably won't want to follow me. I know climate change is happening, but there are solutions that people will accept and solutions thet they won't, or that are just plain impractical for many people.

I'm mildly interested in #spiritualality. At one time, years ago, I would have identified as a Christian but not any more. I'm not sure if I left Christianity or it left me, but I'm very over and done with that, but still have the emotional scars!

People can be as upset about this as they want, but so long as they continue to watch they continue tacitly supporting their user-hostile actions. If you really want to make a difference, stop watching, and tell content creators why. When you can convince them to move to platforms that don't shove ads down your throat every 3 minutes, THAT is when you'll see change their tune.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/01/youtube-appears-to-be-reducing-video-and-site-performance-for-ad-block-users/

Lunatech,

@tilvids If you really want to see less usage then develop a addon that supports or or whatever other service you consider a replacement. Because I watch most videos on my TV, not my computer, using Kodi.

Oh, and do what you need to in order to get your addon accepted into the official Kodi addon repository. I don't get addons from janky third-party sites.

Oh, you don't know how to make a Kodi addon? Well neither do I. Or maybe you think there's not enough people like me to try making an alternative addon? Sorry about that, I guess YouTube is my only choice then.

All you folks who think that YouTube videos are only viewed on phones need to wake up. There are many other ways to watch online videos and virtually all of them support YouTube. When they support a viable alternative, maybe folks will switch to that, or at least reduce their use of YouTube.

  • Lunatech,

@AAKL @BBC If customers hate self checkouts then the store isn't doing them right. As a customer I love self checkouts because then I know that an underpaid clerk is not scanning my itmes twice, and I have time to look at the prices being charged to see if the price at the scanner matches the price in the ad or on the shelf tag. In fact that is the biggest failure I have seen, where the scanner isn't pricing the item correctly, but that would also happen at a human-run register because the prices all come from the same database. And where I live, if there is a scanning error and you are overcharged and you have already completed the transaction and paid, then the store has to pay you a bonus of ten times the difference in the price (between what you were charged and what the price should have been) plus $5. So it it potentially saves the store a LOT of money if customers can see what they are being charged before they complete the transaction, and can get assistance to correct the error.

And sure, in theory you can call an error to the attention of a human cashier, and that's a possibility if you only have a couple of items, but if you have a shopping cart (or trolley as they say in the U.K.) full, an experienced cashier often scans the items so fast you just can't follow along (plus you are often still trying to unload the cart when the clerk begins scanning your order). So all you can do is check your receipt for errors, but now you have to make a trip to the service desk and wait in line there to get an adjustment, and meanwhile all your frozen and refrigerated items are getting warm.

But if I am doing the scanning, I can see the price for each item and if I want to scan my items in a particular order I can do that too. If I don't want my bread or eggs or bananas smashed I can make sure that doesn't happen. If I have to weigh something, I can make sure that a part of the previous customer's order isn't sitting on the scale (that actually happened to me in a human-run checkout line once, and the clerk was totally unapologetic).

And I don't have to try and make small talk, which I hate. Some people may want that, but I don't. I just want to pay for my purchases and get out.

Most of the time the self-scanners at the stores I shop at work great and I really wish all the stores had them. The one store that pisses me off is (); they recently installed a bunch of self-scanners but their scanners neither take cash nor the store's gift cards. So if you want to pay cash for your purchases, you need to use a human-run register and usually there are only one or two of those open, and their cashiers scan items REALLY fast, which is great for people in a hurry but not for people who want to see how each item is being rung up. A store that does self-checkouts right is ; theirs accept cash and give change and hardly ever make mistakes, and they have so many that even if one or two are out of service it usually doesn't cause a backup - I can't even think of a time I had to wait more than a minute or two since those were installed, except for one day in the middle of the holiday rush where I think I had to wait three or four minutes.

@jherazob I don't get the comment about Discord being frictionless, at least for anyone who values their privacy and/or doesn't want to be tracked. I have tried several times to sign up for Discord using a desktop computer (I am old; I don't use a mobile phone for interacting with social media because it is too difficult to type a message on those things) and every single time it has demanded a phone number, which is a big NO for me. I've never had a working Discord account because of that damn phone number thing; perhaps it does not require that from everyone but it always has for me even when I've had an invite code for some community.

But also, I just have to say that I am really turned off by the weird cartoony artwork on that site. I think whoever did that art must have either been higher than a kite, or trying to appeal to 3-year-olds. It's like something Dr. Seuss might have drawn if he'd been taking psychedelic drugs. So, to me Discord never really came off as a site for serious discussion.

    Lunatech,

@arstechnica I am not so sure it is because they want to keep using fossil fuels as it is that the only solutions the radical left (yes there is such a thing) propose involve things that Americans simply will not accept. Such as the idea of riding a fucking bicycle to work or school in the dead of winter. Electric cars are a solution many people would accept, but the radical left doesn't like those for some reason. And it would be possible to make smaller vehicles (something akin to a fully enclosed Tuk-Tuk) that could protect people from the elements and make it possible to carry groceries and other items home without needing to try to tie them down and protect them from the weather.

But no, it is only the "solutions" that 90%+ of Americans will NEVER accept (not even in the face of certain death) that the radical left seems to want to talk about. They are their own worst enemy, and they are alienating people who really do want to see climate change reversed as long as a reasonable solution can be found.

For users, I just found out that there is a way to get newsfeeds of a Lemmy community. It is easier to show an example than explain. If you would be reading the Security News community at its home site using

    https://infosec.pub/feeds/c/securitynews.xml

    So the general format is

where the uppercase items need to be replaced.

Your multi-part post today came in almost completely random order, with parts missing and interspaced with other posts. I could not have followed it all unless I copied every post to a text editor and then rearranged them in order, assuming I could even find all the pieces.

Just FYI, infosec.exchange (the instance I am currently using) allows posts of up to 11,000 characters. But there are other instances that allow long posts as well.

    Why young adults aren't happy...

    .
It’s partially a function of how we’ve raised them. Many grew up hearing how “special” they were.
It turns out that most kids aren’t really special.

And, following their “passion” is a fast-track to a lifetime of making caramel macchiatos at Starbucks. Because no matter how special your kid may seem, they aren’t likely to be the next Tom Brady or Taylor Swift.

Besides the risk of getting mugged, robbed, shot or stabbed, there is always this. Very few people are willing to give up their cars and ride buses or trains when there are people like this around. I know that if you can't or don't own a car you have few other options, but I am just explaining why people who do own cars don't want to give them up. It might be better for the global environment, but it's not better for my personal environment nor that of the people I Love and associate with. And I realize that people walking around with TB is a relatively rare occurrence, but people also get on buses and trains while they are infected with Covid, the flu, and various other respiratory ailments, and you have no idea who they are so you can't even try to avoid sitting or standing near them.

    Lunatech,

@dansup What makes you think that everyone on the planet even HAS a mobile phone? In many parts of the world those cost money and not everyone has them. And even people who do have them to often don't want to give out their number to random services on the Internet, for fear of getting increased junk/spam calls or other misuse. There is really know way of "knowing" your number wouldn't be stored and misused, as your question presupposes.

Personally I think this is a terrible idea, both because of the discrimination against people who do not have mobile phones, but also because you are asking users to trust random instance owners not to do anything bad with their phone numbers. The "bad apples" among instance owners (can you absolutely guarantee there aren't any?) are probably hoping something like this will be enabled real soon now!

  • Lunatech,

@Catweazle @accretionist For what it's worth, I will just point out that one big difference between the USA and many other countries is our constitution, particularly the fact that it is so old and by design very difficult to modify. And then we have one political party in particular that believe the constitution should only be interpreted as the "founding fathers" (all white guys, mostly rich, many slaveowners) would have intended - but only when such interpretations disadvantage the people they don't like. For example, I don't think any of the "founding fathers", believers in limited government that they were, would have approved of the horrible, terrible, despicible "Citizens United" decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.

If the U.S. were like some other countries (possibly those with newer constitutions) it would be easier for the legislature to amend the constitution to give a big upraised middle finger to this corrupt court, and nullify such an obviously bad decision. But in the U.S.A., we have a constitution written back in a time when huge corporations didn't exist, and nobody foresaw a time when one political party would serve only themselves and the interests of their wealthy benefactors.

I mean, to give but one example, the constitution supposedly guarantees freedom of the press. Now, if there were true press freedom, you would not see small news outlets (and larger ones as well) gobbled up by big corporations and turned into fascist propaganda vehicles. But because "freedom of press" is interpreted by the corrupt Supreme Court, along with the rest of the constitution, a large and growing segment of our news media has become tightly-controlled propaganda. I mean, even if all we could do is make it a criminal act to knowingly lie and deceive people, and enforce that against the propaganda outlets that tell the same lies to their audience day after day, that would give us more protection than we have now, but because some old guys that were still used to newspapers printed using wooden type didn't better define freedom of speech and freedom of the press to exclude deliberate lying, there isn't much we can do.

(And yes, I realize there would be endless fights over whether or not something is a deliberate lie or just a misunderstanding, but at least the media would understand that they can't just make shit up about their opponents out of thin air).

Now one could take the view that if the fascists burn down our country, one possible side effect would be that the survivors would throw out the parts of the constitution that just don't work anymore. But that would assume a couple of things, first that the survivors aren't the fascists, and second, that at the point when we are at our weakest one of the other authoritarians doesn't swoop in and take over. I just read that Putin wants to take back Alaska and while he wouldn't dare attempt that today, if we were in the midst of a civil war there would be nothing stopping him, and once he had Alaska who says he'd stop there? I'm sure Russia, China, and possibly North Korea, Cuba, or even some other countries in this hemisphere would want a bite of the United States if they could get it.

You only need to look at Russia to see that a constitution is no guarantee of a good government, or that it will stop an authoritarian tyrant. I fear that if the fascist Republicans take power, we will either wind up very much LIKE Russia or even as a PART of Russia. You may scoff and say that would never happen, but look at all the other things we never thought we'd see in the United States that have happened recently.
