Sometimes you just get lucky. This little yellow warbler literally landed in front of us, and is nicely highlighted by the sun just behind and to the right.

Didn't even need to crop this photo.

Taken this morning.

Later that day, daughter was sitting on the sofa and saw something different land in the maple tree out back. Upon closer look, it was a great crested flycatcher.

Spring migration well underway, such a big change in the birds hanging around the last couple weeks.

Only a couple stragglers left, saw one long-tailed duck and a pair of buffleheads.

Hundreds of red-necked grebes and swallows were back today.

I still find it striking how noisy swans in flight are. Not from any calls, just the movement of their wings through the air.

The grebes are back, including the horned grebes.

I was able to get down close to the shoreline while this little guy was under water to capture it up close.

A rare photo of an upright nuthatch.

Interesting watching them grab seeds from a feeder, go to a nearby tree, stick the seed in a crevasse in the bark, peck the seed with their beak and the eat it.

Off to see if we can find the bullock’s oriole that has lost its way and taken up residence by high park.

Edit: success https://twit.social/@Maleve/112033075976408608

It was grey and foggy, but we did find the Bullock's Oriole. It spent its time all buried deep within a tree, but still managed to get a couple decent photos. Had to switch to manual given all the branches.

Long-tailed ducks coming in for a landing. They are funny to watch, as once they get close to the water they land breast out and bounce to a stop.

I think this little guy is lost, shouldn’t be here this time of year. Seems like he’s pretending to be a nuthatch.

It was a really nice day out today. Cold and we actually got some snow last night and the day before, so it just made it that much nicer.

Heard a great horned owl but could not find it.

Did get some nice photos of a bluejay, several red-bellied woodpeckers and cardinals.

Another grey dreary day. Heard crows making a commotion outside.

A hawk had perched in our maple out back. Crows left and the hawk stayed.

Who is watching who?

Photo of the hawk at 600mm with my mirrorless camera, same photo cropped, and a photo of the hawk with the 1x lens on my iPhone.

Red tailed hawk staring straight at camera. Uncrossed photo, we see the full body, brown eyes, yellow mouth, brown and light brown feathers.
Red tailed hawk in the large tree. The hawk in this photo is small and is against a grey sky. Fence runs along the right side of the photo

There was not a lot of light out back when the red tailed hawk came to hang out. This photo was taken at ISO 14,400. Its amazing how well Lightroom's AI noise reduction cleans things up.

same red-tailed hawk in tree with AI noise reduction applied and no grain and no loss of detail.

There are some aspects of bird photography that are really only solve-able through better camera gear.

As hard as I tried, I was rarely ever able to capture a bird in flight. Having a camera that has a smart subject tracking autofocus and a non-blanking evf makes things so much easier.

Where maybe a couple times a year I'd get a bird in flight, now in one day I can get dozens of photos.

A long tailed duck running across water as it takes off. Wings extended down orange beak, grey head, white neck and brown wings.

Great feature on the Mastodon software is a TEMPORARY "mute". So, if someone is getting on your nerves, you don't want to hear about a topic for a few days, etc. you can mute someone without blocking them. I love that feature!

@ai6yr I have one more use case. I have some people who can toot in much larger volumes than others. If I fall behind on my timeline I mute for 6hr just to catch up and see others toots.

Well, it's year end and I'm on vacation. Why not a thread of some of my favourite photos from 2023...

Start with this one from March, after a light snow overnight.

A little barn swallow sitting under a bridge, from May of this year.

Would love to get one of these little guys in flight. They are so fast.

One evening in July daughter and I popped down to the lake to see if we could find any baby grebes.

As we were watching grebes, I thought a seagul was circling overhead. Nope. It was an osprey. I missed the dive but did manage to get it emerging from the water.

My daughter was quicker and captured some of the dive.

Now for something a little different. Sometimes daughter and I go up to the airport to do some plane spotting.

From June 2023, volunteers have setup these nesting boxes for tree swallows in a field at Sam Smith park.

Uh oh. That’s the second time it’s happened. Just a wipe across the top of the Synology causing it to immediately reboot.

It is very angry when it comes back up.

I didn’t think there would be a static issue but not going to do that again.

So color spaces are really starting to piss me off. Anyone have a favored tutorial / explainer about what they are, how they work, and how to use them to e.g. post photos online?

Maleve,
@Maleve@twit.social avatar

@glennf @ct_bergstrom

@leo had some good shows with Ray Maxwell (Maxwell’s House) on colour spaces. It’s been a while, wonder if they are still online. Have to look and see if I can remember episode number and if they are still online.

Hey @ai6yr check out the plane C-GELS over Toronto. Looks like a tiny single person plane and it just buzzed us and went straight over Pearson Airport at 1500ft on a diagonal.

@ai6yr I’m going to assume there are a few upset people at Transport Canada right now?

Maleve,
@Maleve@twit.social avatar

@ai6yr right? In my layman’s viewpoint, it …. seems … not good?
